How to grow kiwi from seeds indoor - Tested method

in #garden8 years ago

I have always been fascinated with the Pinterest posts that showed you how to grow a kiwi at home from that little seed. One day I decided to try it out.

I went to the store and bought organic kiwis; It's important to use organic to get better chances for the seeds to sprout.

I had not known this back then but apparently there are auto fertile kiwis and male/ female species; the male / female kind need to be planted closer to each other so they can produce fruit. There should be at least one male to seven female plants. How do you tell them apart you ask? Well, that one is a bit complicated; you can only tell when  they are blossoming. The female plant doesn't produce pollen and has ovaries at the base of the flower; the male one has pollen and doesn't produce fruit.

Steps to grow the kiwi plant

  • Take the kiwi, cut it and collect some seeds.
  • Wash the seeds to eliminate the remaining pulp
  • Place the seeds in a cup of warm water in a sunny spot for about a week; you have to change the water daily

  • After they have begun to open it's time to move them into a mini greenhouse; Place the kiwi seeds on a wet paper towel and cover them with a see throw container. Water the towel in case it gets dry. You will see that the seeds will begin to sprout.
  • Plant the germinated seeds; use organically fertilized soil and water it. In the first days, you can plant multiple plants together in a larger pot if you don't have that many pots. After a while, you can transfer them to multiple pots.
  •  Eventually, you will need to make the transfer outside, but I haven't gotten to that step.

I took some photos so you can see the different stages of growth. Some of them have been growing faster than others. Remember to keep them in the sunlight. You can put them in  window sills.

These two are the biggest ones
