Spring is almost upon us and it is high time to get all the fruit trees pruned before they are all blooming. And much general clean up is needed after a winter with very strange weather.

My son is cutting the plum branches into pieces which will fit into his BBQ. He will use the fruit wood for smoking.

The boards he is standing on were part of the recycled wood we stored for projects. Usually, they are not in the middle of the yard. We were building a new chicken coop and had all the wood laid out so that we could see what we have and get to it easily.

It was high time to sort it again, get rid of what is not usable anymore and store the rest in the boneyard for a later project.

The long beam on the left of the pallet was just too heavy for me to move on my own. We cut it in half and are going to use it as the base for a little bridge. And all the other wood is moved out of the way. Well, that section.

The elm branches in the background - basically the whole top of the tree we pollarded - are taking a lot of work to cut to either disappear into a Hugelbed or to be cut for firewood.

The building wood was also stored where I want to continue to dig a swale to catch rainwater. It is raining right now, as I am writing this. Monday might be a good day for digging.

The shed in the background was covered by a huge passion vine. Somehow, the trellis guiding it up to the roof fell over and I had to give the plant a hard trim. I am not sure if it will survive. We shall see.

I am hoping to get lots done in this corner of the yard in the next few days and will take a progress picture.

Is Spring starting to come your way? Or are you going into fall?

What a job! You and your family are very hard workers. This takes a lot of fortitude and strength. I laughed at the word boneyard... It's been a while since I heard that... I think it was a book, if I'm not mistaken. Now I want to go and read that book.

Happy Spring to you, we are slowly approaching spring, although this past week we had horrendous snowstorm with unplowed highway, slush and white outs that I drove white-knuckled through to get to work (feeling as I described previously!) I am so over this season and yearning for Spring, sun and flowers. There's hope, though. I hear the birds chirping outside my window each morning and the excitement builds to be able to soon venture outside without freezing!
Good luck with your many projects!

Wishing you that spring is at your door soon!!!

I'm glad that you're going to have a blossoming spring this time because you're preparing you garden in the before hand . We recently had a pleasant and charming spring and are heading towards a hot summer , the only best thing in summer is that I could get vacation and tasty mangoes ;)

Tasty mangoes!!! That sounds wonderful. My mango tree died since we had colder than usual temperatures.

I'm in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and the weather has been weird recently going from minus temperatures to 10 degrees C last night all in the space of a day or so. Your post has guilt tripped me into thinking about all the jobs that need doing in our garden. I will probably make a start come Monday when I finish night shifts.

I also know what a Hugelbed is now after seeing it in your post and Googling it! :-)

I hear you on the weird weather. Same here...

And I am glad that now you know what a hugel bed is. did you find Sepp Holzer during your search?

No, but I have done now! Do you follow the principles in Holzer permaculture closely?

I am in a very different climate but I have taken several permaculture courses and apply as much as I can. a lot of his work is done with huge machines and I am working with woman power lol
But I am amazed over and over again what all is possible and I do very much like his approach.

I will have to do some more research and see what I can apply to my small piece of earth. Thanks for the education - two things learned! :-)

Spring is coming my way and I just put some cool weather spring crops in. I’m looking forward to the warmer weather and the summer crops

I hope that you get lots of good harvests!!

Thanks, same to you!

Spring is coming our way, if winter ever lets it. lol

spring has 10 days - it better gets there :)

I cant wait to come help! Passion vine...as in passion fruit?! @creationofcare - lots of work for us to get our hands dirty here!!!

Yes, as in passion fruit :) And I have tons of projects - that is for sure...

Our snow has mostly melted, but the frost has not yet gone out of the ground. It won't be too long now before spring arrives! Good luck with all your projects!

Wishing you the joy of the first flowers soon!!!

Spring is far from North-East Italy yet. Our country is split in two, with the South almost in an anticipation of Summer and heavy rains in the North, where we are expecting a second coming of Burian for the end of March. Burian is a frozen wind that comes from Russia.
Today I'm stuck in home with a huge cold and fever, no much energy for doing anything ;)

P.S.: how did you do to put 10 tags in a single post?
