Earthworm Farming: The compost
My reason for looking into earthworm farming is the Vermicompost. Vermicomposting is the process where earthworms turn kitchen wastes into high-quality compost for the garden. It got my interest due to following reasons:
First, it is a very effect way to recycle all my garden and kitchen wastes.
Currently, I am trying to add these wastes to a compost heap which sometimes work and other times not. The garden waste is getting so much at the moment that my compost heap is taking up too much space. It just feels there is too much squeeze for too little juice.
Second, vermicompost is very micro-organism rich which in turn help with the health of the plant to fight off diseases and pest.
Vermicompost consists mostly out of worm casts (poop) and some decayed organic matter. The earthworm can eat at least his own weight of organic matter in a day. It is also found that the casts contain eight times more micro-organisms as their feed! And an additional benefit is that the casts don't contain any disease pathogens because al the pathogenic bacteria are killed in the worm's' gut.
Third, the nutritional value of vermicompost contains five times more nitrogen, seven times more phosphorus, and 11 times more potassium than ordinary soil.
The large numbers of beneficial micro-organisms in worm casts help to make the nutrition more available to the plant and in this manner increases the nutritional value of vermicompost. The casts are also rich in humic acids and have a perfect pH balance.
I have already set-up the worm farm and my kitchen wastes are dumped into it. Hopefully, I will have my vermicompost soon.
