Northern Homesteads Getting A Head Start On Summer

in #garden7 years ago

All the windows were full of tomato seeds just planted.

Late Feb. we tend to start planting seeds and getting a head start on the growing season. At best, in the north we know that summer is short.  We plant as much as we can and then we transplant and put new ones in the small pots in the window.

The sturdy and best tomato plants are transplanted into a larger pot to get a little bigger before the final transplanting into seperate pots.

These are now going outside for the middle of the day to grow and harden a bit before replanting into large pots where they will be for the season. One pot for one plant. Tomorrow they will go to their pots to make room in this container to grow the peppers a bit more and harden them off.

The Peppers Are Ready For The Larger Pot To Get Stronger

As soon as the tomato plants get replanted tomorrow, these peppers will enjoy their new space. They will be here 2-3 weeks. You don't have to do this twice if you have room inside for more pots. This is a tiny space and we have to maximize it.

The green beans in the picture are ready for their own pots and will get those tomorrow. They are moved only once. The cilantro is also ready to plant in a larger pot.

Tomorrow will find melons, jalepeno peppers, and some squash in small pots in the window.  We also have lemon trees ready to plant again this year.  We will get some larger pots and start the peas and spinach directly in them, as they are early birds in the north. Herbs will also go directly into their pots.

Gardening is a lot of fun, provides healthy food, and for a little work, you gain a lot. I hope you enjoy the fruit that comes from your labor. Season it with a lot of love.

Very nice ... you have a nice mix of vegetables happening there. I see no mention of lettuce and/or spinach. Do these grow at all there? Or beetroot? Two or three of these plants can be harvested for weeks on end for salads...

I will sow several pots of these in a bit. Working on the things that take more time to come to production size. Replanted the green beans today, will do the tomatos tomorrow, and the peppers the next day. Planted Jalapeno seeds today. Have a very small space for these babies to hang out and it is still too cold, even for potted plants.
