Road Rash is a vehicular racing video game. It was created by Electronic Arts while its publisher was Sega in 1991. In the beginning, this video game was aimed for Sega Genesis platforms but later, it was ported to several platforms. In those new platforms, the sequel of this video game was made and aimed. For example, you can find Road Rash in PlayStation platform.

Development

Randy Breen who was the designer of this video game stated that "Initially all we knew was that we wanted Road Rash to be more of an entertaining game than a pure driving simulation. I'd been into motorcycles for a long time, and we quickly realized bikes gave us lots of technical advantages. For instance, we could put more bikes than cars onscreen at once, and the bikers were more visible than car drivers, so they could be more expressive."

Gameplay

The gameplay of Road Rash is similar to Hang-On which was developed and released by Sega and Cycle Warriors which was created by Tatsumi. The mission in this video game is very simple. The player just needs to finish in 3rd or 4th place. For your information, this race is illegal. So, if the player passes to the next level, the requirement of finish position is higher. In addition, in the next level, the game is tougher than that of the previous level. The rider in the next levels are faster and fight harder. The track is also longer than that of before and more dangerous.

The requirement of Road Rash is that the player competes with several grade changes. The player must pay attention while riding the motorcycle because the track consists of some dangerous part such as going up, going down a hill, and turning while climbing. If the player is not careful, they may crash. Moreover, there are other obstacles in this video game such as street signs, trees, poles, and livestock.

The unique part of this video game is fighting while riding among riders. The player can use a variety weapons to fight other riders or only use bare hand and kicks. The player also can seize the weapon from other riders while punching if the timing is right. If the player succeeds to beat the opponents, the opponents' stamina will drop and it also can damage the motorcycle. In addition, you must pay much attention to police officers because they fight the riders.

Reception

This video game was successful because it received many good responses. For example, the famous magazine named MegaTech stated that "Lots of races, lots of bikes, and plenty of thrills 'n' spills make this the best racer on the Megadrive!". Then, another magazine named Computer and Video Games praised this video game. This video game also got a final score of 91% from Mean Machines magazine after the magazine reviewed this video game.
