Smartphone's are the future of gaming's, according to Epic Games CEO

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney think's that Mobile games are becoming competitive with console games, and companies through out the industry are not taking advantage of the potential of handsets .

Sweeney defame the distinctions between ‘consoles ’ games and ‘Mobile ’ games, suggesting that publisher's of mobile titles viewed them as “a different game that is a dumbed down mobile experience ”.

He also said that games markets are being divided , with action games like Fortnite on consoles and Mobile gaming dominated by slower puzzle games .

Indeed, among the highest-grossing Mobile games are puzzles games like Candy Crush Saga and Angry Birds 2, but Sweeney is convinced “ the genre thing is over rated, and the platforms decisions are over rated ”.

At GDC 2019 Epic released the Epic Online Service , a kit which let's developer's add cross-play functionality to their game's (as well as other features). This kit was inspired by the company's success with Fortnite Mobiles, which allows cross play between Android's and iOS device's as well as consoles.

“Fortnite has paved the path for a lot of things. I think the cross-platform experiences, companies through out the industry's are not taking advantage of that yet.” said Sweeney .

Playerunknown's Battle grounds, a close competitor's of Fortnite, Currently allows play between Android's and IOS devices, but
not between Mobiles and consoles.

While Sweeney is taking aim at the game's industry for not jumping on the trends of Mobile gaming faster enough, there's another problem she doesn't address – namely that mobile hardware is still not in a prime place for competitive gaming.

The fastest Mobiles chipsets, likes the Snapdragons 855, still don't holds candle to the internal tech within a console or high end PC.

Further more, playing a game using a mouse and keyboards or consoles controllers is very different compared to using a phone or tablets, where your finger's can easily get in the way and battery's life prohibits extended gaming period's.

Despite companies releasing phones that are designed to be great for gaming's, like the Razer Phone 2 or the Asus ROG, handsets manufacturer's still have a way to go before they develop hardware that competes with others gaming devices.

So, Sweeney might have to wait a little longer before mobile gaming becomes as competitive with console gaming as he'd like.
