Terminator 2 on SNES - Truly awful

in #gaming4 years ago

Most of the "Arnie" games were really bad back in the 80's and 90's and this late arrival to the Genesis after the world had well and truly moved on to disc-based systems such as the Playstation and the Sega Saturn and yes, I am aware of the Sega CD, but that piece of crap doesn't count.

LJN games are a bit of a laughing stock in the video-game world. Most lists would include the "best games" but most lists of LJN games are entitles "The least terrible LJN games" and with very good reason.

LJN figured out that if they can just get a hold of the movie rights to a game they don't actually have to make the game any good, or really follow the story of the movie in question very well in order to sell a bunch of them. That was certainly the case with Terminator 2, which might be one of the worst action games ever made.

Where to start on how awful this game is? For starters, you are a super tough T-800 in this game, yet your melee attacks are almost useless. Based on what we know about Arnold in the films a punch should put a hole in a person if he wants it to, but yet you have to punch or kick the never ending horde of bikers several times to take them out and this is where the game becomes truly frustrating.

Arnold is SLOW, really SLOW and the hit-box on the enemies is absurdly small - A little too close or far away and you hit nothing and since the AI of the enemies is dead set on standing on top of you, this means you are trying to shake them off constantly. Since most of the enemies move FASTER than you, this means you can frequently have a mob of people who are occupying the same space as you, but you can't hit them, and they can't hit you. It is truly dumb.

Once weaponry gets involved it becomes a game of simply staying in a crouched position because 90% of the enemies are only capable of aiming high and you just shoot them in the legs until they die. This doesn't help you very much though because they are almost immediately replaced with other bikers in a never-ending stream

Because of the adventure elements that are built into the game, it is extremely difficult to figure out what the hell you are supposed to do. For example: On the first level there are a bunch of biker bars but the real objective is to find John Conner's phone number, which is inside of a phone booth outside.

Basically, you needed a guide in order to know what the eff you are supposed to even be doing which might have been LJN's idea in the first place. The internet was not very useful in the late 90's so it became necessary to buy a $10 guide at which point the previously impossible game became absurdly easy.

Of course a great deal of the game involves escorting John and Sarah Conner, but they are completely incapable of following you and you have to constantly hit pause to tell them to "stay" or "follow" else they just run off somewhere or become near instant cannon fodder.

I think that the developers knew that this game was really bad and they introduced the most massive "life bar" that any character has ever had in any game. Arnold can take a massive amount of damage. You could just stand in one of the rooms and go use the bathroom, getting shot hundreds of times and not really be in any danger of dying - which is good because you only get 1 LIFE for the entire game.

Overall, it is a toss up as to which game is worse, this or Total Recall. I would say they are equally bad and should be avoided but if you want to see how terrible LJN games were this is one of the most broken games they ever developed and you can check out the ROM here

I downloaded this rom years ago and tried it to compare the arcade version and this was no where near the arcade version! I was truly disappointed. You can still use a controller instead of a light gun and that is why i was disappointed. Aerosmith Gen X was on SNES, Genesis, PC, and Arcade and all 4 were the same other then how the overall graphics looked based on what platform the game was played on. Terminator 2 was a totally different game! I wanted to blow things up!

yes, this is another aspect of just how horrible LJN was back in the day. The arcade was a fun gun-oriented shooter and this was just... i don't even know how to describe it. A quick cash grab by LJN but that was what they specialized in!
