Evil Inside: Stupid game with terrible controls
Every now an then i buy a game for next to zero money and after playing it for just a little while I end up wishing I had instead gotten a pirate version of the game instead of paying for it.
This is the major reason why I do pirate games first before trying them because there is some real garbage out there that the creators are able to make a pretty nice looking trailer but in the end the game is a piece of crap that stops being interesting and just becomes tedious and stupid after playing it for just a little while.
This is what happened with Evil Inside

From the offset it looks like it is going to be an interesting and scary game where you are in a Resident Evil type environment looking for clues and exploring some sort of massive or at least reasonably sized house or mansion. Instead, what we get is the same sequence of rooms that somehow manage to change each "day" that you go through them. You'll reach some point in the stage and then whammo... you are just back at the start and you go through the entire house again, which at the point where I quite was just a couple of rooms a hallway, and some sort of garage type area in the back of the house.
src
It looks spooky enough and it would be if it weren't for the fact that I have already gone down this hallway dozens of times, looking at everything in the hopes that a circle icon was going to pop up indicating that there is something that I can now interact with that I couldn't do so with before.
There is no logic behind when you can interact with stuff and when you can't because the same items for the most part are in view the entire time that you are running through the hallways. So basically you just have to run around and look at EVERYTHING and then hope that one of these items is going to be something you can actually touch this time. It's a stupid!
To make matters worse the controls are terrible. You "look around" with one of the sticks and it's almost like they simply didn't give a shit because the default speed at which touching the stick makes you look around is waaay too fucking fast. I had to go into the option to make this slow to a point where it was actually usable. If any person were to turn their head that fast in real life a neck-injury would be imminent.
Also, the default walking speed is extremely slow and I can't think of any reason why this would be what they would do. There is a run button and I ended up using it basically the entire time.
To the best of my ability to tell this is some sort of creepy puzzle game and the answers to the puzzles lie around you in the various rooms that you have access to but the puzzles get really convoluted really quickly.

This isn't the answer by the way
It was only on day or phase 3, I honestly don't remember what it is called and I am not going to go back and look, that i encountered a padlock which was one of only 2 things that I could possibly interact with. The other was a drawing with a bunch of numbers and crazy lines on it. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what this was and found myself looking online for the answer and I hate it when I have to do that, especially so early in a game.

The answer came from this drawing and by following the lines in the drawing. I mean, it was obvious that this is where the combination was going to come from when I was playing since it was the only other thing that you could interact with at all on the stage. But you had to flip the image just so in order to see it and of course, since the controls are friggin terrible, mostly you just ended up flipping it madly in all directions. Then, you need to have pretty amazing eyesight to see where the lines are actually going. On my 50 inch TV sitting at a normal distance from it trying to play this I nearly lost my damn mind. On a PC monitor sitting entirely too close to the screen you could probably figure it out.
I can only presume that the puzzles get more convoluted from this point forward and no thanks is the answer I had for this game at that point. I remember the days of MYST and how maddening all of that was and I am not interested in doing through puzzles like that again nor am I interested in feeling compelled to check the internet for a walk through every time there is another stupid puzzle.
I understand now why this game was so cheap, because it sucks. It may have been ok on PC but on PS4, it's terribly, clunky, slow, and boring. Stay away from this title even if it is free.
Why are you playing such scary games?
I'm 7 hours in. I'm having fun with it. I still basically agree with everything being said here, just not as strongly. The one exception are the complaints about the forced 30 fps & forced super-wide aspect ratio (black bars): I couldn't care less about that. And yes, I am a life long PC gamer.
Ever played on 120fps or higher. You get used to it and then 30 fps sucks.
scary games used to be my go to back in the day and it had been a while. I only got this because it was super cheap. Otherwise I probably would have just left it alone
Honestly, I'd recommend the game if you love atmosphere. I personally just accepted quarter way through the game that I would stop thinking about the story and accept what was happening as if I were in a dream, where I accept random stuff without a second thought. The game after that point, to me, became much more enjoyable. Stop absorbing the story, and just enjoy the atmosphere. Accepting the game as some sort of dreamscape really allows the game to transport you to some very awesome, disturbing environments.
Not paying attention to the story seemed to pay off because a lot of events do not get explained by the ending. I had much more fun/understanding reading descriptions from the 3D models they allow you to view after beating the game.
As for the horror aspect, the game was always tense, but never really overly scary. It was good at building tension and forcing you to be cautious but I never felt scared where I wouldn't progress into the scary door being banged on. There are some areas that feel creepier than others, and a lot is due to the amazing atmosphere.
I did feel battle fatigued the further into the game I got where I wish guns didn't get so heavily relied upon, and that sorta broke the horror aspect more than anything else. Rather than managing ammo and dispatching one creepy dude after another like the early game, I was being put into waves of enemies that didn't seem so creepy anymore with loads of ammo spread around the arena.
The boss fights really got lackluster after a while. Really fantastically designed, just with rinse and repeat strategies. I wish the game took advantage of the traps aspect more, because I felt the most action/shooter fatigued during these moments. A good amount of the final fights felt like a routine chore. Also, the checkpoints in this game are balls.. All the tension the game can throw at you becomes annoying when you are set 10 minutes back and have to do it all over again. This section is now lacking tension, and has just become annoying.
maybe I did give up too early. I never got to any part where you even had weapons. To me I think this game would be fine on a PC but on a console it is just poorly ported IMO
