Shotguns in Video Games

in #gaming6 years ago (edited)

Well, hello there, dear steemians! Today I am going to talk about shotguns in video games. Yes, boomsticks which wipe out enemies who are not wise enough to steer clear of your path. Without further delays, let's look at some video game shotguns which stuck in my memory.

Doom II's Super Shotgun

You can't say video game shotgun and not mention the granddaddy of them all. Yes, Doom's original shotgun was a pretty neat weapon, not gonna lie, but the Super Shotgun takes the cake. It is a classic double barreled shotgun, you fire both barrels at once releasing devastating damage upon your foes. Zombies, Commandos, Imps, Demons, Specter, even Hell Knights cower when they hear the thunderous roar of this weapon in the dark hallways of Hell, knowing they are going to taste the rain of pellets coming from this monster of a gun.

F.E.A.R's VK-12

Modeled after the popular SPAS-12, this gun has so much raw power that enemies are thrown off their feet when hit, walls get damaged and the weapon itself sounds like you are firing a cannon. Add to that how the game uses bullet time 90% of the time and you can admire in slow motion how the pellets leave the gun and penetrate your enemies and the environment, leaving only destruction in your path.

Serious Sam 2's Auto Shotgun

This weapon is all about style. Damage output is disappointing, the pellet spread is small, but it is a multi barreled shotgun. Think of it as a minigun which shoots shotgun ammo and has a pretty slow fire rate and you get this gun, which is really unique, but not useful. It doesn't help that even the sound it makes when firing is really weak.

Bulletstorm's Boneduster

From the name you can already feel this weapon is not to be messed with. So, Doom had a double barreled shotgun. That's cute. The Boneduster has four barrels which shoot at once. Any poor bastard unfortunate enough to cross your path will simply be turned into minced meat (also getting a bonus called Topless for obliterating the upper half of eneimes).

Homefront: The Revolution's Shotgun

This weapon is by far the only redeeming quality of the game. It has great impact and damage and it is uncomfortably loud, actually resulting in me turning the volume down a few notches. This is a huge plus in my book and I just wish this weapon was in another game, preferably a good one.

Unreal Tournament's Flak Cannon

Ok, this is a bit of cheating, because technically this is not a shotgun. It does not shoot shells, but heated up shrapnel. Still, it acts as a shotgun (and grenade launcher) in gameplay, so I'll count it in. High damage output combined with the outlandish design make it stand out from the crowd, so props to Epic Games. This weapon sure ruined many killstreaks.

Well, damn, that was a bit hard to put together, mostly because I like shotguns in most games which feature them. Hope you liked reading through it, and maybe I opened your appetite for some shotgun rain.

Mmmm, flak cannon. When I first noticed that smiley face on the ball, I thought I was seeing things.

Well, the ball is so happy it is literally going to explode XD
