Ultra's Reviews: Pokemon X and Y (3ds)

in #gaming6 years ago

So. Pokemon.

Back Around 2013 (Maybe Earlier) Pokemon Fans were Enjoying Black 2 and White 2. However Not long After Game Freak announced the Next Entry to the Series. Pokemon X and Y.

What do I think of these games? is it worth it Buying these games? Let's Find out.

North American Box art for Both Games

PLOT

So. The Story Begins in the Kalos Region. An Area based on Real World France.

The Player has Just Moved in into a Small Town called Vaniville Town, Soon the Player Meets their Neighbors. Shauna, and Either Calem or Serena(Depending on what Gender the Player Chose). The player learns that Professor Sycamore has a request for five kids: the player, their rival, Shauna, and two other guys named Trevor, and Tierno. In Aquacorde Town, Once the Player Reaches Aquacorde town and Meets Trevor and Tierno, the Player then chooses a starter Pokémon and Receives a Pokedex and You Learn that the Professor wants the Player to Fill in the Pokedex.

So yea. It's the Standard Pokemon Plot. Player gets a Pokemon and Pokedex, You go around and Fight 8 Gyms, Receive their Badges, Fight Villainous Team, Encounter your Version's Legendary Pokemon, Fight the Elite 4 and the Champion and BOOM! Credits.

X and Y Specifically is the WORST Version of the Pokemon Formula Yet.

The Villainous Team, Team Flare sucks, Their Plan is a Rehash of Team Galactic From Generation 4, and Their Designs are Meh. The Only Redeeming Quality is Their Boss Lysandre. Who also Kinda Sucks, I mean When you First Meet him It is Obvious that he is the Bad Guy.

And Most of the Characters are Either Awful or Completely Forgettable.

I mean the Post game is Amazing because It has some REALLY well Written Characters in it. But the Main Game's Sotyr is just...bad. I'm sorry.

GAMEPLAY

It's the Standard Pokemon Gameplay. It's a Turn-based RPG, Each Pokemon has a Type, Weakness, Resistances, and Moves to use in Battle.

Outside of Battle You Run around, Collect Items, Explore the Overworld, and Solve Puzzles.

X and Y does add a Few New things. First off these were the Games that Introduced the 18th Type, the Fairy Type. Which Allowed some of the Weaker Types Such as Poison to get Buffed, and some of the Stronger Types Such as Dragon to get Nerfed.

X and Y allows you to customize your Trainer with different Outfits. Kinda useless but it's always fun.

X and Y also Introduced Mega Evolutions. You already know How I feel about them. A Mechanic with Lost Potential. I mean they Could have Given Megas to some Weaker Pokemon. but Most of them are To Fan Favorites. I mean Why does Charizard have 2 Megas?

If it isn't Obvious by now, X and Y mainly has a ton of Gen 1 Fanservice. And Don't Get me Wrong, it's Nice to See Developers to Cater to a Part of the Fanbase, But if it Effects Game Balancing. I have a Problem with it.

There is one Change they Added that Made the game SUPER Easy, Changing the EXP share, Previously the EXP share was a Hold Item that Gave EXP to the Pokemon Holding it even if they did not Participate in Battle. Now for X and Y and all Future Games the EXP Share is now a Key item that Toggles on and off, When it is on It gives EXP to your Entire Party. and it's Clear that they did not Balance the Game around it, because it's Super Easy to get Overleveled with it on.

I know you can Turn it Off but it's On by Default.

There are also Inverse Battles Where Weaknesses and Resistances are Reversed, and Sky Battles, where only Flying/floating Pokemon can Participate in.

There are some Amazing Changes, Item balls that Have TMs in them Are Yellow Now(While Regular Items are in Normal Red Pokeballs), The PSS is an Amazing and Easy way to Play Online Really Quickly, Super Training is Fun and Great way to Keep Track of EV training for Competitive Play, Pokemon Amie, While Can get Boring, is Interesting.

Finally the Roster of new Pokemon in X and Y is the Smallest in the Series with 72 new Mons, While the Roster is Small, it's Solid, yea there are some Stinkers there, But Other then that I really Like this Roster. 9 out 10 for New Pokemon.

Gameplay Overall is a Solid 7.

PRESENTATION

The one Thing X and Y Nailed on the Head is Presentation.

With the First Main Series RPG to be Entirely in 3d, the Game looks Great, The Music is Fantastic, and While the game does have a ton of Lag in 3d mode, It's nice to see Beloved Pokemon with GOOD 3D Models. Heck the 3d Models are So good, they got Reused for Pokemon GO.

The Character Designs are Interesting Enough(Even for the Forgettable Characters).

But there are some Flaws here and there, but only Minor Nitpicks.

Overall Presentation is a Solid 9.

THE BAD

The Story Sucks, The Game is Pathetically Easy, the Pacing and Balancing is Awful, and They Ruined the Potential with Mega Evolutions.

So yea.

OVERALL

It is Very Clear that X and Y were Rushed to Meet a Deadline.

But it's one of the Few Pokemon Games that I can Easily Replay for enjoyment.

X and Y are not Bad games in their own Right, but when Compared to Other games in Main Series Pokemon, X and Y Fall a bit Short.

I can Appreciate what it does Right, but the bad things are Really Noticeable.

I Can't Give this game a Very high rating, But I will say, for a Casual Gamer, this is a Game for you and Can probably get you into the Series.

Pokemon X and Y Gets a 3/5
An Enjoyable Experience, But has a ton of Flaws.
