Ultra's Reviews: Kirby's Adventure and Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland (NES, Wii, WiiU, 3ds) (GBA)

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

Welcome back to month of kirby.

After the Success that was Kirby's Dreamland. Sakurai decided to Develop a Sequel on the Nintendo Entertainment System. or NES for short. this game would improve over the first game in almost every way.

Today we are going to talk about Kirby's adventure on the NES, and its 2002 Remake, Nightmare in Dreamland

I am putting these games together since they are pretty much the same game with a few differences

Story

High above Dream Land exists a sacred fountain known as the Fountain of Dreams, the fountain collects the hopes and dreams of every living thing on planet Pop Star and in turn provides restful sleep and pleasant dreams to the residents of the world, which flow from the fountain in liquid form before evaporating into a mist which spreads over the planet.

One day Kirby Wakes up from a nap to find that he did not have any dreams. he goes to the Fountain of Dreams to investigate. In doing so, he discovers that King Dedede has stolen the Star Rod, the source of the fountain's power, and broken it into seven pieces, giving six fragments to his strongest friends and allies. and is Now Bathing in the Fountain.

Without the Star Rod, all of the inhabitants of Dream Land are becoming restless as a result of being unable to dream. Kirby decides to track down the fragments of the Star Rod and bring them back to the Fountain of Dreams in order to restore everyone's dreams.

Ok this Plot is a huge improvement over the first game. while still being pretty simple.

Gameplay

Kirby's Adventure follows most of the same rules as Kirby's dreamland.

Kirby can jump, Slide, Float. and inhale.

However This game Introduces a new staple in the series. Copy Abilities.

Once Kirby has inhaled a foe he can copy their Power by pressing down after inhaling a foe and can use their power by pressing the B button, these Abilities can range from breathing fire, to Swinging a sword. there are 25 abilities in all.

While some abilities (Cough Cough Spark Cough Cough) are better then others (Cough Cough Sleep Cough Cough)

Most of them are fun to use, even if some of these abilities are only useful in like one or two levels.

The game has a Pretty linear overworld with linear levels. there are some minigames to play in this overworld and you can find some secret levels by finding a secret exit.

The minigames are different in the original and the remake, though Im pretty sure the original only had a crane machine. so the remake gets the point here.

There is even a Boss Rush Mode where you have to beat all of the bosses as fast as possible.

There is Even the Return of Extra mode. Which is pretty much the same game but you only get 3 units of health and there is no saving. you have to beat the game in one go. in the Remake its the same but you do get to save the game.

Oo this game is pretty fun.

The Remake also has a few New modes as well. there is a Co-op mode which is not that great from what I heard(never play Co-op on this game)

And a Mode Called "Meta Knightmare" where you get to play though the entire Extra Mode(including the no saving). but you get to play as one of the game's bosses, Meta knight, who is essentially a permanent sword ability that does a ton of more damage, and his dash is much faster then kirby's but the trade off for this speed is his weight. He is significantly heavier than Kirby, making him harder to move while flying and he will fall quicker while in mid-air.

Presentation

The Graphics look pretty good for a NES game. however the Remake gets the point here looking better and sounding better then the original and having a bit more polish.

The music sounds pretty great too. but again I find the music to be better in the remake. with my favorites being Butter Building and Dedede's theme.

Final Boss and Ending (Spoilers....Yay, Skip ahead if you do not want to be spoiled on an old Game)

So after reaching Dedede you must fight him,. this fight is very similar to his fight in kirby's dreamland, but stick to your guns you will eventually get him.

After beating him you find out. there was a reason why Dedede Stole and Broke the Star rod. Turns out he did so to Stop a Greater threat. Nightmare. who wishes to corrupt the Fountain of Dreams to give everyone Nightmares. so Dedede gives kirby the. now complete. Star rod and sends him into the sky to battle against Nightmare.

The true final battle begins. the first phase is pretty simple, just dodge his star attacks and use the star rod to deal damage quickly. you have to be fast, there is a hidden time limit. take too long then Nightmare will run away and you will get crushed and instantly die. however this time limit is much for Forgiving in the remake.

After beating Nightmare's Ball form you will go to Pop Star's moon to fight Nightmare's Wizard Form,

This fight can be challenging, you have to attack the weak spot, the.....Glitchy.....tornado......thing that is under his tornado like cape.

After beating him Nightmare Explodes. blowing up part of the Moon. then the game Reveals Dedede's Motives of his intentions are actually pure, and Kirby Returns the Star Rod to the Fountain of Dreams, Ending Kirby's Adventure/Nightmare in Dreamland

Conclusion

Even though Kirby's Dreamland being the first kirby game, Kirby's adventure was the first game of many kirby fans

While the game can be enjoyed today. its hard to recommend it when the Remake is essentially the same game but better.

This game introduced the copy ability system. however it did abilities rather poorly. the newer games spoiled me on abilities.

Kirby's Adventure gets a 3/5
While can be fun, really only play it if you are looking for a Nostalgia.

And the remake, while not really changing the abilities at all. gave us more stuff to do with Meta Knightmare, and more fun minigames.

Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland gets a 4/5
Fun game for those who enjoy it.

See you all for the next review where we will be going back to the Gameboy for Kirby's Dreamland 2.

awesome post, brought me back to the days. Although quite simple I really enjoyed these kind of games, today I find myself chasing badges and incredible stats that make it hard to enjoy some games (I'm still stuck on Destiny).
