Tempest – Dave Theurer 1981 – USA
Theurer was one of Atari’s original game designers. Working all by himself, Dave developed two classic Atari games, in this post, I want to talk about Tempest.
Tempest is a fast-paced, vector game where players maneuver around a cylinder and fends off a barrage of advancing monsters.
The two direction joystick and 2 firing buttons made gameplay simple yet fast. This game pushed the colour graphics technology at the time to its limits. For Tempests futuristic innovation, Theurer received the Pioneer’s Award in 2012.
I actually really enjoyed this game. It did get a bit tiresome to have to press the button so quickly but the various maps and monsters kept you in your toes.
Peace ✌🏾
