                         Prey 2017 Gameplay Trailer Review.

When it was announced that Prey 2 was being cancelled and then rebooted, I was really disappointed. The original game was so awesome and innovative, that after completing it, I was INSANELY curious to see what the sequel would be like, what's the story, game play mechanics and whatnot. Alas, sadly it wasn't meant to be. Then Bethesda Softworks picked up the rights to the franchise; giving me a sigh of relief that the series is gonna continue; albeit in new direction, which was met with a bit of skepticism  at first, but as I viewed the official trailer and gameplay footage, I was really intrigued and excited as so far, Bethesda has had a great track record of developing awesome and exciting games; especially the Dishonored series. The games development will be handled by Arkane Studios. So with that out of the way, here is my review of Prey gameplay trailer.

The opening narration introduces us to Morgan Yu, who has a recurring, mysterious dream that keeps repeating itself over and over again; like a futuristic version of "Groundhog Day" if you will. The sense of fear and uncertainty in his voice brings a sense of urgency, and  impalpable intensity and really convincing judging by the VA alone. I'm pretty sure other characters will be introduced over the course of the narrative, but his voice sold me on the idea that you are this lone individual trapped in a nightmare beyond your wildest dreams.

But all of that wouldn't be enough if there's no solid foundation on which to build on and thankfully, Bethesda teased the audience by providing little snippets of lore and plot here and there for all to see. The premise of aliens infesting an abandoned space station isn't new though; the System Shock series, which this game takes heavy inspiration from, has done this before. But while that series dealt with a rogue A.I. named "Shodan", voiced chillingly and menacingly by Terri Brosius, in this situation, we have a alien race that looks to be the Smoke Monster of "Lost" fame's evil cousin. And lets face it; anything made out of swirling black smoke is terrifying!! And what makes them even more terrifying is they have the ability to mimic objects in the game's environments!! Yep, you read that right. They can shapeshift into ordinary household...err...space station objects such as chairs, power generators, computer monitors, etc. So know you're thinking, "out of all the aliens I've fought in Sci-Fi horror video games, I've gotta fight aliens that can transform into seemingly ordinary objects with the sole purpose of jump-scaring me and then kill me. Perfect. Juuuust perfect."

Sounds good to me, cuz with that type of enemy, things are bound to get very interesting.

But what' s even more interesting is the mystery as to what happened on the space station, it's inhabitants, and the twists and turns that is expected out of this new reboot. The graphics of course, should also get special mention; a unique blend of retrofuturism and art deco that gives it a refreshingly otherworldy feel; which sets the tone rife with fear, suspense, danger, and most importantly of all, horror.

So, that's my review of this trailer of Prey. And it's one of my most anticipated games of 2017. If you're into sci-fi horror games, this is the one to get.
