in #gaming7 years ago

The PS2 was the longest selling console of all all time, and with that came a shit ton of games to choose from.

Even to this day, there are still development companies that have a license to make games for the now ageing console. Recently, @Deeviras was given a first gen PlayStation 2 console with a few games. She intends on setting it up so we can play some old school games. And there are some gems to choose from in the collection she was given.

So here are 5 Awesome PS2 games you should play before you die.

5 – Metal Gear Solid 2.

My readers should know by know I am a huge Metal gear solid fan, and this had to be in this list.
Although there was some controversy over the advertisement of the game featuring solid snake, but the main protagonist was in fact Riden, left sales a little shy of what it was expected to do. But soon after some gamers played the game and so did the critics, word of mouth and magazine publications gave it great reviews, the game gained the traction it deserved and became the ''go to'' game if you owned a PS2.
It was fantastic. Kojima took everything that was great about the original PS1 title, and advanced it to another level, adding in new combat mechanics, stealth, environment design, and even the story took on a whole new role with on point cinematography and voice acting. Although not the best MGS game, it is still graphically beautiful and an iconic PS2 game that is now routed in pop culture.

4 – God of War II.

Kratos has battled more mythical gods and titans than I can remember. Even so, it is the second game that saw the most epic gameplay of any of the other games.
The back story of Kratos was he was fooled by the gods into killing his own family, and now he is on a path of revenge, killing titan, gods and there minions alike.
Compared to the first game, the developers in this one brought the scale up, and by that I mean monstrously big scale. The fighting mechanics are smooth and look brilliant, the boss battles were beyond epic and the environments were damn sexy to look at. Everything about the game is very appealing and fantastic to play.

3 – Shadow of the Colossus.

If you thought the new game for the PS4 was good, then you should play the original that made the remake possible.
The art style in this game was well beyond anything that had been seen on the PS2 platform. The shear scale of the colossus in this game were mind bending. The wide open scale of the world was awe inspiring and the fight mechanics were equally amazing. The amount of time and effort that had to go into the look of the game alone is beyond anything. To be able to put so much detail into the game was epic.
Yes it did suffer from a few frame rate problems during certain times in the game. But with that aside, everything else more than makes up for a few dropped frames.
The gameplay took boos fights to an all new level and combined a very enticing narrative that kept you playing for hours on end.
Most people say games are not art, and to those people, I would tell them to play this game and I dare them to say games are not art.

2 – Resident Evil 4.

After Nemesis, fans were left hanging for several years before the next game was released, hoping it would get out of development hell.
Fortunately, the developers, after restarting the game from the ground up several times, gave us what would become a genre changing game.
Gone were the fixed cameras that had been seen in the previous 3 games, and an all new over shoulder, 3rd person style was introduced. Some people believe that this took away from the game, while the rest of us thought it enhanced it. The gritty, real time environment was what kept that 'horror' in this horror survival. There are still tense and frightening moments in the game, and when combined with the fact if you mess up, you could die much easier than before, which added an all new challenge to the game. The story could have been a little more polished, but the gameplay, puzzles, action, graphics all came together to create something that changed the franchise, for the better, forever.

1 – Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.

You knew this was coming right?
The GTA franchise is quite possibly one of the biggest next to Mario. The PS2 was graced with 3 GTA titles, GTA III, GTA Vice City, and San Andreas. Though it is San Andreas I remember more so because of the massive scale of the open world that featured not only 1, but 3 cities all interconnected with small towns and vast landscapes in between.
The story, although very cliché, is still something that is both easy to follow and enticing enough, that you want to find out how it all ends, with some very good twists in the there for good measure.
The freedom to do what you want in the game is all the more interesting. From body building, to getting fat, from taking girls on dates to being able to hold your breath under water for longer, the more you did it. Earn cash as a taxi driver, take people to the hospital, put fires out, fly planes. There is so much to see and do it is unreal.
When compared to today's GTA titles, the graphics do start to look dated, but if you put that aside, everything else about the game is awesome.
Using the same engine as the previous 2 games, it is amazing how much detail they fitted into such a huge world. It truly pushed the PS2's capabilities to the limit.
Now the game is available on tablets and other platforms like Xbox and PC, so even if you don't have a PS2, there is no excuse for you not to enjoy this game.

The PlayStation 2 sold over 150 million units and lasted beyond 2 generations of console, the PS3 and PS4, before it was finally discontinued. It is quickly becoming a collectable and people are paying good money for these consoles and games. And @Deeviras was given one for free, so ner ner na ner nerr.
But these are only some of the games you should play, as they are the games that defined everything that came after.

Thanks for reading.

TBT :D Although I had an Xbox from the getgo and was a Microsoft console user of the Xbox from the beginning till the Xbox One I now own, I know the PS2 & Xbox are basically the same thing, with almost near similar engines, UE and 90% similar games. And I know the feeling of nostalgia that comes with old games, media and entertainment, not just Xbox or PS games. I get nostalgic with Yugioh cards every blue moon, Pokemon Gameboy games, old Naruto shows and of course old xbox games such as "Dead or Alive 3", "Grand Theft Auto III" & "Halo II".

@techmojo thank you for your blog and bringing hundreds of people back to these nostalgic moments which they might want to relive or rethink about and for bringing back the Kid in Grown-ups (or making Grown-ass men feel giddy again)

cheers for the kind words dude. much appreciated.

I first played GTA: San Andreas on my cousin's PS2 when I slept over her house for a month of holiday, and it was entirely using cheats, for the purpose of making everything easier, obviously. Infinite ammo, became immortal, you name it. And I was happy with it. I progressed through the game with a smile on my face.

Just a moment after I killed Big Smoke, one of the near-end mission, I stopped. I put the controller down and sat there by the window, looking outside as the raindrops flowing down the glass, brooding, as if I was filming a music video. Then I realized it was lame. It was lame that I got myself that far fully with cheats. Regret started to fill my heart.

The holiday was over, and I went home. I haven't finished the game. Determined, I decided to take the bus to go miles away to my cousin's house every weekend only to finish GTA: San Andreas from the beginning without cheats. It was tiring. I could have done something else on those weekends. Since then I have never used cheats in video games again (except to fix bugs and stuff). It was tiring, but it was worth it.

What you just read is the best story of 2018 and beyond.
