Virtual Reality is becoming more of a reality as the technology improves and so do the games.

Since 2016 when VR headsets exploded onto the gaming scene, first the Oculus Rift in March, HTC Vive in April and then the Play Station version in October, game developers have been hard at work creating games to fully utilize the technology and creating immersive experiences that everyone can enjoy.
In this list, I will concentrate on active VR where you need to participate in the experience, rather than passive where you simply sit and use a normal controller to play, essentially moving the screen from the monitor to the VR headset.

With that said, here are 5 of the best VR games of 2018.

5 – Robinson the Journey.

PC and PS4.

  • Developed by the same studio behind the most infamous game in recent history, Crysis, this new take on the classic book, Swiss Family Robinson takes you on an adventure like no other. You are stranded on an alien planet where dinosaurs rule and you have to survive by searching for 5 capsules that are scattered about this huge sandbox to figure out what happened to your ship.
The graphics of this open world are nothing less than what you would expect from a studio who redefined the meaning of graphical quality. It is visually amazing and one of the better VR experiences you will ever have.
Although the story is a little bland, the gameplay is top notch and well worth spending several hours exploring the dense forests and space crafts in this next level VR game.

4 – Resident Evil VII VR.

PS4 Only

  • With Overkills the Walking Dead being an overhyped bag of shit, plenty of gamers are still looking for a zombie game that can reinvigorate the experience and emotions that the original first 3 Resident Evil games gave us in the late 90's.
The 7th instalment of the franchise being the only really one game that can measure up.
Based in rural America, this zombie survival game brings you closer to the action than ever before. There is a single player experience will keep you entertained and scared shitless as you try to survive this nightmare. The graphics are on point, the environment is a little small but the atmosphere is terrifying, the amount of different mechanics and how new the technology is, it is a brilliant all round game to scare the shit out of you.

3 – Star Trek Bridge Crew.

PC and PS4

  • Based on the events during the 2009 JJ Abrams Star Trek film, you take command of the USS Aegis to help find a suitable home for the remaining Vulcan's. You have to search in an unexplored region of space known as the Trench where you will have to command your crew in this strategy focused game in exploration and battle.
For those of us who are fans of the Trek franchise, this game is by far one of the better games based on the works of Roddenberry. It is supper immersive with a campaign that can last days on end as the game generates missions and side quests as you progress further into the game.
The only downside to the game is that you need a permanent internet connection, but the game is fantastic.

2 – Farpoint.

PS4 Only

  • While as some of you know, I loath most First Person Shooters as it is the same shit repeated over and over again, this one on the other hand takes the game style to the next level.
Think Monster Hunter meets Crysis, this game throws you into the deep end as you fight to survive on an alien planet, fighting all types of monsters big and small while trying to find a group of scientists who crash landed their.
The visuals in this game are insanely good, the mechanics used are brilliant with a very accurate representation of what your physical actions are and the story, although a little cliché is very good. There is a solo and co-op campaign as well as online multiplayer and a challenge ranked system where you can try and beat other peoples scores online.
This is what most other FPS games need to look to for one making a new one.

1 – Elite Dangerous.

PC and PS4

  • From one of the best space sims of all time to one of the best space sim VR games of all time. When this game was adapted to be used with VR, it added an all new dynamic to the game that increased its immersiveness ten fold.
Yes the game was released in 2014, but wasn't adapted for VR until this year and that time spent improving the game shows when playing in VR.
You can do everything from trading, scavenging, and dog fight in a one to one creation of the milky-way. It is a huge sandbox that you can spend the rest of your life playing and only explore a small fraction of what this game has to offer.
There is a small downgrade to the graphical quality but it still looks amazing all the same and better than some other triple A games out there.

Virtual Reality, although it has been attempted before is finally reaching its stride as the market for VR headsets becomes more and more competitive and so does the hardware that drives them too. With that comes the games that make your gaming experience as immersive as possible, and every year, they just keep getting better and better.

Which game are you looking forward to?
