Science Fiction lets all of us explore what could be, and can make the future possible.

Sci-fi has a big impact in everybody's lives today. Without star treks communicator, we may not have the mobile phone. Without Sci-fi TV shows and films, there would have been no inspiration for scientists to become who they are, designing all the tech we use on a daily bases and give us the understanding and knowledge we have today. So it makes perfect sense that there are a lot of people who like Sci-fi style games. And these are some that you should try at least once.

So here are 5 of the best Sci-fi Space games you should be playing.

5 – Star Trek Online.

Although this MMORPG can feel a little slow when you first start a new character, the game actually starts to get very addictive once you finish the whole 'tutorial' stage and start exploring more of the galaxy.
For those that are fans of the TV shows and Films, they will love this game as it does contain everything you would expect to see. From the ships, shuttles, and species to the planet names, characters who are voiced by the same franchise characters, to the overly elaborate stories and missions you take upon yourself to complete, everything about the game has been painstakingly designed to look and feel as though you are there.
There is content added on a near daily basis, so you will never run out of stuff to do inside this expansive galaxy of planets, bases and Borg cubes.
Even though this game is now touching 7 years old, the graphics and game mechanics feel a lot more modern, and the online community is very big, with very active servers 24/7 that has a good social interaction in game and on the sites message boards.

Star Wars Online is very similar in appearance and mechanics, however, Star Trek is more Space battle orientated, where as Star Was is more Ground based. And with me being a huge fan of space battles, that is the reason Star Wars was knocked of this list.

4 – Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion.

Now I played this game when it first came out. You have the choice of 3 races to play as, and the aim of the game is to overthrow the other 2 races by colonizing and conquering other planets to build up your resources that pay for planet upgrades, ships and weaponry.
The online community is still very much active and you can play games with up to 9 other people in a single match. And there is even clans and a league you can join.
But the best part about the game came in more recent years. The game is shipped with the ability to add and remove mods, but it is the downloadable mods that make the game so good.
From time to time, if you play the same game over and over again, it can get a little boring, but with the introduction of better and better mods, you can now essentially convert the game into a Star Wars game, or Star Trek, Stargate, Warhammer 40k, Battlestar Galactica, Eve, wing commander, and a number of other mods, stories, expansions and scenarios. All of which can be played online in multiplayer battles.

3 – Universe Sandbox 2.

Not so much of a game, but more of an interactive educational software style game.
This game is endless fun that has no real point to it as it is a simulation of space physics. Ever wondered what would happen if you threw a baseball at earth at the speed of light? How about increasing Jupiter's mass until it turns into a star? Or even see what would happen if you placed a black hole next to the sun? Well that is exactly what this game is for, take an idea and see what will happen. You can create your own star system or speed up time to see how long it would take for a black hole to consume a galaxy.
There are so many possibilities, you can easily loose track of time playing it. Recently I have been trying to create an earth type planet the size of Jupiter around a Blue Hyper giant star, for no other reason than to see if it is possible. And blowing up the earth by hitting it with the moon at the speed of light. Love it. But the more complex the simulation is and the faster you run it, the more powerful your PC needs to be.

2 – Kerbal Space Program.

Another Sandbox Style game, but this one has a more specific purpose... Get into space first.
Most of your efforts in this game will be more failure in the beginning, but as you play the game more, you will improve by not blowing up the little green men on the launch pad.
The idea is to construct unique but functional rockets that can take the little green men who inhabit this world, into space without killing them on the launch pad, crashing them into the moon or the surface of any number of planets and moons in the solar system.
Most of the game is spent in the hanger as you try to assemble the perfect rocket that can carry the little green men into space. But that requires plenty of perseverance and trial and error as you will undoubtedly fail more than anything. First you break the speed record, then you try a launch, then you try to get it into space, then you can send a little green man into space, then you can head to the moon and then beyond.
The game can get a little frustrating, but the rewards are well worth it in the end.

1 – EVE.

When this game was first released, it was not all that good. Yes the scope of the game was amazing, but everything that was worth doing was few and far between. But with now constant updates, the game has a lot more content now it has had time to mature.
This games scale is awesome. You take on the role as captain of your own ship in this mind bendingly good looking game.
Just like some RPG games, you can grow and improve the more you play, and just like some RTS games, you have to be able to shift focus from when to fight, and when not to fight. You can shift your focus from being a trader to a smuggler to pirate with everything in between.
Just like some other games in this list, it can be a little slow to start. More so with this title, as you are mostly resource collecting to get credits to upgrade your ship as well as learning how to play the game during this tutorial period.
Once you get past the initial learning curve, the game takes on an all new role as you are now part of this massive community. You can take on any number of missions, of which they seem to be endless and eventually take part in the huge ass battles for huge risk, even bigger rewards if you survive and win.
Visually the game is stunning, and recently it has moved to a free to play game. Since then, the community has grown tenfold and is more social than ever before.
