5 Of The SCARIEST VIDEO GAMES Of All Time! - Gaming Top 5 - Part 78.

in #gaming6 years ago

There are hundreds of ''Horror'' Games available to play. But which ones are the most scariest of the all?

I have been a fan of the horror genre ever since I saw the intro to George Romero's 1985 film, Day of the Dead, when I was a kid all those years ago. The film industry knows how to scare its audiences, but the gaming industry does struggle. Thankfully there are a handful of games that will make you shit your pants.

So here are 5 of the most scariest video games of all time.

5 – Outlast.

  • This game was available for free on the PSP when the PS4 was released, so the chances that you have tried this game are high. I say tried as many people stopped playing it the moment they saw that first body reach out to you, making you soil yourself in the process. Maybe it was Sony trying to have a cheap laugh or had a deal with an underwear company.
Either way, the game is pure gold. It is centred around a journalist who goes into an abandoned mental hospital for a story. But he can only view everything through his camera/night vision because of how dark everything is in this game, has no weapons and can only run away when shit hits the fan.
This idea has been tried in a few games before, but Outlast pulled it off. The combination of visuals and audio, combined with the freakish nature of the characters in the game through the night vision on the camera, make this a game worthy of a place on this list. It isn't the best game by far, but it is damn fucking scary to play.

4 – Silent Hill.

  • With the rise of the 'Zombie' genre in the late 90's, with Resident Evil leading the pack, Game developers had to come up with something that could stand out in the crowd.
Instead of going for that 'Gore' tactic many devs were aiming for, this game is centred more on the psychological side of fear. The hardware limitations at the time actually helped towards making the atmosphere in the game all the more terrifying by using the mist, which was an excuse for the game devs as the draw distance was very low. Combine that with nightmarish visuals that melt through reality when you hear an air raid sound, and that fucking bell is something to make the poo shoot out of your rectum.
After a car accident, your daughter goes missing and you have to follow clues and search the town for her. But to get things going, the first part of the game has you going down a dark ally that gets increasingly more nightmarish the further you go, and it ends up with you, weaponless, getting stabbed to death by little dead children for the Japanese release, and little demons for the US. Only to wake up in a diner where the real 'fun' begins. Oh and you only have a small flash light when it gets dark..... enjoy!

3 – Dead Space.

  • Now to try and explain this game, and indeed the trilogy, you have to imagine it like a cross between, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Event Horizon (the movie) and Alien (the movie) all mashed together to create something that makes you believe the phrase, ''No one can hear you scream in Space!''... which is true, but that's beside the point.
You are an Engineer that boards a derelict in space, that just so happens to be occupied by creatures that only exist in your worst nightmares. Well that was until you play this game. While on the outside, this may just look like another gore fest of a game, but when you are actually playing the game, the tense atmosphere in the game will leave you with sweaty palms and laboured heavy breathing as you just simply walk down a corridor to find someone who is missing there skin, banging there head against the wall, and you hope he doesn't see you.
While the jump scares in this game are far and few between, the intensity of that atmosphere this game creates, makes you want to have a set of clean underwear on standby.

2 – Resident Evil 7.

  • Even though this is the 7th Resident Evil Game, and the franchise is now roughly 20 years old, it has produced not only a Zombie game, but they have finally developed a game that is truly terrifying.
Since we saw that very fist Zombie in the first game, there has been little in the franchise since that could be classed as ''scary''. That was until there 7th entry. Imagine having to sit around a table with a family that could resemble the Manson's and the family from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, eating rotten food, covered with maggots and forced to eat some human flesh too. Yep, not my idea of a Sunday brunch either.
You have to try and find your girlfriend that is located in a cliché 'cabin in the woods', but once you enter that cabin, all hell breaks loose. I don't want to give too much away but if you like the feeling of feeling ill to the stomach, wanting to vomit, and cleaning up after you have soiled yourself, then this game is definitely for you. Jump scare after jump scare, each as intense as the last, visuals and narrative that is beyond sickening and an atmosphere that that puts the ''fuck you'' in Fear.

1 – Alien Isolation.

  • This game is Cat and Mouse at its finest. While there is little in the way in gore in this game, and lack of weapons, everything else about it will make you blow out your own ring... several times.
Just like the Original 1979 film, this game has you pitted against a single Alien that has some of the best AI I have ever seen in any video game... ever.
You play as Amanda Ripley, and you set out to find the flight recorder from her mothers ship (from the film), only to be left on board an almost baron ship that seemingly has been through some kind of trouble, after you have an accident while changing ships. You have to try and find a way to get off the ship, without being killed by the alien.
The narrative is fairly simple, with no back story on how the alien got aboard the ship in the first place, but that is what makes it so brilliant. Instead of going all out on a story, as so many other games do, the Devs concentrated more on the atmosphere and the AI of the Alien. Just like dead space, Jump scares are far and few between, the intensity comes from actually hiding from and trying to get past the very cleaver and very intuitive Alien that learns how you play the game. Don't hide in the same spot twice, because the third time will be your last. The Alien can appear at any time, any where, and once it finds you, you better have something that can distract, scare it off or you escape quick enough... if not, once he does get hold of you, that's it, you're dead, and you have to start from your last save. Combine all that with some awesome audio work, it creates an air of fear that has not been seen in any other game, even on this list. So grab some spare knickers, because you will need them.

As a big fan of the horror genre in general, I am a little disappointed by the lack of ''horror'' games available that will send that chill down your spine. You know the Horror games that are actually scary. But the ones that are, do it to epic proportions that rival the film industry offerings, and these in this list are right up there on that scare factor scale. Just be sure that you play these games, at night, in the dark with a pair of headphones on at full volume. If you are going to play a horror game, play it the way it was meant to be played.

What is your favourite scary game to play?

Some nice choices! I have yet to try Outlast, but since its on the Switch now I'll probably pick it up sooner or later. Hopefully Limited Run Games does a physical version of it.

Silent Hill was the only game I ever had to put down and walk away from. The atmosphere, the story, the decaying rusty environments and horrible sound design just got into my head and about 70% of the way through the game, I had to quit. It was just too much -- and we have a library of literally hundreds of horror movies.

i know exactly what you mean. i think it had something to do with the cannabis back in the late 90's, that got me through to the end. sadly its a similar story with Alien Isolation, only i don't smoke any more to help me through it. so instead i will just live stream instead and poop myself live for everyone's entertainment. lmao

I used to think one of the reasons why horror games are scary is because we can't fight back and can only run away... Dead Space proved me wrong. Dead wrong.

I hate horror games, but it is amazing to watch :D I think Outlast is the most terrible :O Great post!

Can't leave out PT. That game haunted me for months.

technically PT was a Demo for Silent Hills that ended up being cancelled because Konami is a bunch of corporate dicks. but i will agree. that shit was scary as hell.

It was a brand new concept called a 'Playable Teaser' but yes ended up being the launch for Silent Hills which was the coolest marketing gimmick of all time. And ya Konami sucks.
