[Review] Watch Dogs 2

in #gaming8 years ago

Hey everyone

Today I am here to talk about a game that isn't really new but that I've actually completely forgotten that I own. The game is Watch Dogs 2. This game I received with a coupon when I bought my graphics card and they had some kind of campaign for it.

I've always really liked open world games like Grand Theft Auto and Saints Row due to them giving you a sort of freedom in the game that most don't. The first Saints Row game was in my opinion the best but I think they really started losing it when the story was about aliens and gods and stuff. Watch Dogs was also open world but when I played it on my PC, the driving and other controls really made the game kind of hard to enjoy. I've noticed the driving thing in a lot of other open world games too. It's kind of hard to explain but the steering is just very weird and hard to control. I hope you know what it is I mean.

Watch Dogs 2 however looked very promising from the very first time I started seeing ads and trailers for it on the internet. The game was released in November 2016 and the developer is Ubisoft Montreal. It's set in the San Francisco Bay Area and it's a third person game. The graphics are really beautiful as you can see in this picture:

I really always liked the idea of Watch Dogs where you are able to hack things using your phone. This means everything from traffic lights to civilian smart phones. As you level up you also unlock perks which let you do a number of things with hacking and other equipment you use.

The story is pretty cool too. You play as Marcus Holloway who is a hacker that starts working with a hacking group called DedSec. Their mission is to take down the city's surveillance system which is called ctOS. The ctOS is a surveillance system that connects everyones devices like phones with eachother and let's the government take all of the information that is passed through there. You can complete the missions in different ways and progress in the game in your own pace. The city has a lot to offer you so you might take your time. Another really cool function they have in the game is that it's kind of multiplayer and you can co-op with friends and sometimes if another player is causing too much havoc you can get a mission to take him down. I also noticed immediately when I started playing that they had fixed all the things that I disliked in the first game. The driving was better and also the hacking had become much more easy to use and just overall better.

After a little research I learned that they had completely overhauled the driving mechanics for this one and even taken in actual hackers to give them advice on making the game seem authentic. So it seems they actually did their best to make this game a success and I have to say it really feels like a great game now.

You have other things than your phone at your disposal as well like a drone that you can use to fly around and take photos or hack peoples phones.

There is also a 3D Printer in all of the DedSec headquarters that you can use to craft weapons and other equipment. It's incredibly fast at making assault rifles for you. As you can see in the picture it's also pretty big.

San Francisco is a really beautiful city and there is always something to do. This can range from taking down criminal groups to driving around for people like an Uber. I've been playing for about 40 hours now and I've not completed as much of the game as I would've thought. Even though I've spent a lot of my time just doing stupid stuff and driving around hacking people.

I also want to mention that the free running that you can do in the game is also really awesome. You can almost parkour around the city and it let's you get around so easily and smoothly that you might not even want to use any vehicles at all. Here is a snap I took while doing some kind of cool flip over a fence. The picture turned out a little blurry but I thought it still looked pretty cool. So you kind of get the idea of how you move in the game. I might post a video at some point in the future.

As I said earlier I received this game in some campaign that was being held when I bough my GPU but if you are interested you can get the game for 15.50€ on G2A. If you like open world games in this way then I would recommend you try it out. If you also like hacking then you will love this game.

If you've already tried this game then let me know what you thought of it in the comments below! I really like the game so far. That was it for my review of Watch Dogs 2. Thank you for stopping by and I hope you liked it! :)

Have a good week everyone!

One of the criticized points in his first appearance was that the game was very stingy about making him feel like a hacker. Cameras, traffic lights, etc. This hacking in the form of a form of game was not able to sit in one way. Perhaps because Aiden is a serious person, maybe the lack of team spirit has put us out of the game atmosphere. :)) @strawhat

Yeah it's a really cool game!

Yeahh , I hope game world continues to amaze us :)) @strawhat

It's very pretty. In a huge screen should look amazing! :d
I wonder if their story as good as the first part.

Yeah it really is. I wanna visit San Francisco one day! :D

Nice review. I'm in a similar position to you in that I've only been playing it recently, but I do quite enjoy it.

I played the original Watchdogs too and I must admit, the driving didn't bother me, but WD2 just does everything better in my opinion. It's less po-faced, the movement is great, the level-up system and introduction of drones are great, and there are some really cool interactions that go on around the city too.

One of my favourite things though is the visual style. The graphic designers who worked on it have done an amazing job. The UI, the gif-style animations and the whole hacker world are great. I really need to pick it up again and finish it. Thanks for reminding me! 👍

Yeah I totally agree. The graphics and the whole gameworld is absolutely beautiful. All of the visuals with DedSec and the animations as you say are also really cool. :D thanks for stopping by!

No worries, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Oh I think I played this game for like 2 hours at a friends house. There are also minigames in it right? That you have to run a track and collect coins? I thought it was quite funny but never bought it myself! I do like open world games tough. It gives you much more freedom and changes the gameplay :) Good review :D

Yeah there are minigames like that. They're pretty fun too. Thanks :)

Watch Dogs 2 never made me feel Hella Cyber, but when used to leverage as much chaos as possible in the open world, it can feel like playing GTA with a measured god mode enabled. Silly, strange things happen often, but only if you ignore the missions and mess around in the beautifully realized open world. That’s where Watch Dogs 2’s true enjoyment lies—not in its cheeky Hot Topic hacktivism story and frustrating, bland stealth scenarios, but in the nonsense you can pull off in a big sandbox with wacky toys and fast cars.

That's a really good way of putting it.

The gameplay is fun but after you unlock some specific powers, you feel underwhelmed by the lack of a challenge. Once you unlock the gang attack or the police arrest abilities, you can use that multiple times to get yourself out of sticky situations. Although it's pretty humorous to watch a bunch of Mexican gang members simply gain access to an FBI HQ to kill a target, it highlights definitely lack of balance between empowering the player and flooding the player with enemy AIs with razor sharp aim.

Haha yeah the gang attack is pretty funny :D the powers really do make you feel like a god but I do agree some times it's just too easy. Plus all the missions are like 10x easier to complete if you just run through and shoot instead of stealthing around and actually trying to not get caught. :D but maybe that's just me

At first I thought it was a movie, the graphics are just so good

It's a really nice game. graphics, in-game navigation opportunities. As you say, it is a game of gta 5 and saint row style. from games that absolutely have to be played with extra features. I would recommend one of the games I enjoy. @strawhat

This is an intense game one of my favourite :D

Watchdogs is a very beautifully done game! But I'm sad.

Acidyo don't upvote me anymore, looks like I'll become a beggar and don't ever buy my Lambo :((

It really is I loved the graphics :) thanks for stopping by and have an upvote buddy. Don't be sad :3
