Monday Memories - The Commodore Amiga 500 Plus

The Amiga 500 Plus was made by Commodore and released in 1992. The plus indicated it was an improved version of the popular Amiga 500. One of the main improvements was it's ability to run higher resolution displays.

It ran the Amiga operating system version 2.04 and was powered by a Motorola 68000 CPU. Running at a mighty 7.16 MHz. In comparison the Playstation 4's CPU is 1.6GHz.

It came packing 1 MB of memory. Today's Samsung Galaxy S8 which can fit in your pocket has 4GB.

I personally liked the fact the disk drive was integrated into the keyboard saving desk space. Which was important back in the day, considering the size of the dot matrix printer sitting next to it. (The image above shows the Amiga with the external disk drive).

The version I had growing up was the Cartoon classics edition (as seen👆), which came with the following games.

Captain Planet and the Planters

It seems captain planet knew global warning was on the way as far back as 1992. The idea behind each level was saving the world from pollution. Level one involved you repairing the ozone layer allowing polar bears to return safely to the north pole. Extremely random but good fun back in 1992. The levels were based around earth, wind, fire, water and heart.

Lemmings

Lemmings was all about saving as many lemmings as you could before they fell to their death. As you progressed through the levels the computer came up with even more evil ways to kill your Lemmings. You could assign Lemmings skills in order to guide them to safety. There were blockers, which stopped the others from ploughing over the edge to their death while you formulated a plan. Builders who could make bridges over gaps and you could even hand out little umbrellas to cushion a Lemmings fall.

Bart Vs The Space Mutants

It's seems most of the games that came with the cartoon classics edition had a random aim to them. In this game aliens had taken over Springfield and as Bart you had go round armed with a can of spray paint and spray anything that was purple. Using your x-ray glasses you could see which humans were in fact aliens in disguise. I don't think I ever made it past level 2 on this.

Bart riding on his skateboard jumping over obstacles was a nice feature on level one.

Deluxe Paint

Deluxe Paint was the photoshop of it's day (maybe not). It was used for creating graphics and basic animations. It had a lot of inbuilt images, like an animated waterfall and the picture of Tutankhamun that appears on the box, which back then seemed like actual magic. Comparing it to today's software is like comparing a stick to a rocket launcher. The stick is beyond outdated.

But like with all things we need to start somewhere and in it's day Deluxe Paint was ahead of it's time as was the Amiga itself.
