Retro NES Game Review: XexyzsteemCreated with Sketch.

Firstly Xexyz is indeed a odd name for a game and if your wondering it's pronounced "zek-zis" not sure if this as anything to do that with the fact you spent most of your time rescuing women like Queens of the land, fairies and women who are just trying to bath.

Actually I have heard they are mermaids who live in tubs or female aliens who need warm water to live so by destroying the monster in the room it turns on the hot water, well whatever they are they are much bigger then Apollo the main character you play in the game.
We could delve more into the different theories on this alone but it's already a strange introduction for Xexyz.

So what is Xexyz?
Well that's kind of hard to explain because Xexyz is one of those games that tries to do a few things at once which I think is impressive to try such a task back in the NES era.

But if we are to strip it to it's bare bones like most NES games Xexyz is a 2D side scrolling platformer, but it also tries to be a space shooter, and also tries to give the player the impression that's it's an adventure type of game.

For most players back in the day initially the adventure side of things can seem a bit confusing, this is because each level contains many doors.

Think of it a bit like exploring a residential area and going into all the houses in search of things, but in this game it's also the overworld and so full of monster who are always trying to attack you.
So in some sense the doors can be seen as somewhere safe to take a quick break, but this is not always the case some will contain enemies.

You can do different things in these "safe houses", like weapon upgrades, pay for information, gamble with your (E) which is the in-game currency.

But while all that is going on the real purpose of these main levels are for you to find a particular set of star blocks that contain a hidden door where you must then fight a statue that grants you a star.

The purpose of these stars is to grant you excess to the mechanical castle at the end of each level.
So you can think of the like a key to enter the castle.
The reason why you are in the castle is to rescue the Queen of the land but before you can do that you will be introduced to the space shooting segments of the game.

The game does a good job of catering for this type of gameplay, these levels play like most shooter found on the NES they even offer 2 kinds of power-ups.
One is a (S) container which increases the speed of your ship and the other container types (P) which increases the fire power of the ship.

Most of the bosses in Xexyz will be in this space shooting type of form where you must shoot the correct spot to deal the boss damage which is highlighted when hit correctly.

Once the boss is beat you rescue the Queen of the land and must shoot your way to the next land.
It's from here that you will begin noticing slowly that the game repeats this over 10 times making Xexyz feel like one of the larger games on the system.

Like most games Xexyz isn't without it's problems, like many games in the era the difficulty can be a problem, but I feel that sometimes this is at fault of the game.
One example that many complain about are the enemy placements when coming out of doors I believe all can be avoided but it's incredibly difficult to not get hit by enemies and this is important when you have power-ups and don't want to lose them due to bad design.
With just normal play it can sometimes feel like the enemies are placed in such a way that the game wants to make sure that at this point in the game you definitely get hit or lose a power-up this is regardless of your skill level.

You can farm for money or life points which is great but can be difficult not to die in the process, still my point is if you lose a power-up you should be able to buy it back again visiting the correct door but I experienced a few times that for whatever reason I couldn't buy the same power-up again after I lost it which I think seems very unfair.
Some of the drops sometimes are impossible to pick up because they are stuck in the environment and you can't get close enough to pick it up it's particular annoying if you really needed life or (E) money.

Another thing that's very frustrating is just how many times your shots can sometimes miss enemies this as lead me to get hit many times unnecessary.

There is also a odd level "the space shooter type" where your ship keeps taking damage for whatever reason and this is just before a another difficult section ahead is about the begin plus a boss after, I think it's like level 6 or something which is somewhere in the middle of the game, if your going to make a level that hard at least put it towards the end.
Another thing about the shooting sections that's annoying apart from your shoots missing enemies sometimes is also how power-up are places on platforms that cause you damage.
While it's possible to pick them up without taking damage it's unnecessary difficulty.

I guess the good thing about Xexyz is if you lose all your lives you don't start from level 1 but you do start from the beginning of the level you are currently trying to beat, but with unfortunately minus most of your (E) money.

image.png

In conclusion Xexyz like many of these games can be incredibly frustrating to play but I do like how Xexyz tries to make you feel like your on this grand adventure by adding different play styles and how each of the main land levels looks so different from the next.
I also enjoyed most of it's music and so the question is would I keep a game like Xexyz in my collection and recommend it to others.

It's honestly difficult to decide but I think it would be yes, this is because it does try hard to be different and offers a lot more then most games did back in the day, it's just a shame some of it's negatives make it so frustrating at times but if you look past those it's actually a good game.
