Retro NES Game Review: Street Fighter 2010 The Final Fight
Spoiler alert guys so I have been trying out the NES versions of some Street Fighter games and I must say I mostly have not been having a good time with them.
But what about Street Fighter 2010 as it's a completely different game compared to your typical Street Fighter games?

Firstly what is Street Fighter 2010?
I would say the game plays more like your typical already often seen side scroller games on the NES rather than a 2D fighter that most people would expect when purchasing a Street Fighter type of game.
But Street Fighter 2010 The Final Fight is interesting, as in a way it tries to make some of it's levels incredibly unique, think along the lines of the many levels in the Donkey Kong country games series as they tried to always bring a new concept to it's 2D side scrolling levels.
However Street Fighter 2010 isn't just 2D side scrolling levels, it still contains 2D battles but they have their own take on how these 2D fighting battles should be.
Unlike normal Street Fighting games, it's more described like action based battles as you get to run around the arena, jump and even climb walls, you deal with multiple enemies rather then a single opposing fighter.
So the game definitely tries hard to give you a unique experience and so is it's story, well you can easily argue it's not your typical Street Fighter type of story either.
Firstly you should know that we play as Ken, apparently Ken was the king of all Street Fighter Champions back 25 years ago but as since became weaker due to simply time and of course inevitably getting older.
But in the game Ken uses bionics to fix any of he's shortcomings from back in the days when he used to be known as that legendary fighter that fans know from the first games where fans first started to enjoy these characters.
Anyway but why as Ken decided to turn to bionics to fight again rather than just age gracefully?
Well in this story it seems Ken and Troy had a Research lab together as they worked on new inventions one day someone broke into their lab and kills Troy in the process.
Ken is very upset about the loss of he's friend and wants he's revenge on the one who killed Troy and so Ken want's to pursue the killer.
Like this the game begins and Ken must chase the killer from planet to planet, the game is very futuristic for 2010 but hey I guess people can dream.
For many fans of the first Street Fighter games the story itself already made many of those players not want to play this game, not only that but when they discovered it's more like a platformer Mario type of game this made even more not want to play it.
It's unfortunate that many are not willing to give such changes a go but it's also very understandable that when you mix up a genre people had already originally fallen in love with there is going to be trouble.
But the game also as many more problems to deal with, this first one for example is a odd one, we are talking about the general movement of your character.
It's so weird to describe but for a NES game the movement is actually great, you have some nice jumps, you can climb walls easily like something out of assassins creed, you also got a backflip which is actually very useful.
Now all this sounds great except it really isn't, see many of the levels you are placed in are arena type areas and you have to fight a few enemies in this space in order to open up a portal to process to the next level or fight.
And so unless you get really good at the characters weird movement your going to be in for a bad time.
You are going to notice this weird movement right from the get go, infact this weird character movement might be enough for you to never even bother trying to get past the first level, yes it's that frustrating.
See the character movements seem to be much better equipped for side scrolling type games, the crazy thing is Street Fighter 2010 does actually contain these type of levels just not many.
In these instances the game seems to play better but due to enemy placement it still feels there's a lot of unfair bad game design.
But why is that? Well let's talk about another very frustrating aspect of the game, and that is the "shooting" punches towards your enemies, yes that's right you don't really punch your enemies as you would expect from a typical Street Fighter game but rather if you want to actually get through this game you will want to collect power ups which extend the range of your punch shots.
And don't get me started with how silly the power ups work, they are essential for getting through the game in my opinion but unfortunately your power-ups first must be discovered and collected during the levels, you fill a bar up as you collect more of them.
The horrible thing is when you get hit not only are you losing life bars but your also losing your collected power-up ability which is honestly more frustrating then it sounds as there are many parts were I feel having a certain range on your power-up is very much needed to get past a certain area.
Anyway back to the bad punch shooting mechanics, when you press your attack button Ken will only fire differently infront of him, now that's not really a problem for most games and it makes sense however the developers decided it would be a good idea for most of your enemies to come in at all directional angles making it very frustrating to hit even basic enemies on the very first level.
You do have a directional kick shot but honestly it doesn't really make up for what is needed, especially early on as it seems enemies have to be somewhere too specific for these kick shots to be of much use. So if you want to get through the game you will need to practice very much just the basic movements.
And even when you got that down expect to have a real tough time because this game is not easy at all.
Or is it? See this is what's so messed up with this game, there are certain sections in the game where I just can't tell if the game is broken of if developers done it on purpose for you to discover.
On many of the bosses there are certain places where you can just stand there and the boss will never even hit you, making some boss battles really easy.
With some games you can easily tell if the developers messed up but for me this is a tough one to decide on, I think it may of been there to discover because I do think that it seems most levels are about discovering it's trick so that you can actually beat it.
Which is a good thing and that is where the fun part of the game comes in, there is a great feeling of being stuck somewhere only to discover that wait "if I just keep doing this" you might actually get past the level and when you do finally beat that section it feels great.
The movement itself is actually great for a NES game "but just not for this particular game" which is so sad as this could of been such a good game for the NES I think.
The graphics are also nice for a NES game and the music is good, I get flash backs of Donkey Kong games with the interesting different level ideas and sometimes when jumping around on the normal levels I almost thought I was playing the SNES version of Super Ghouls and Ghosts.
Its just a shame the game sometimes feels unfair and broken like some of the hit boxes seem off, while some levels while they look great to understand them it can be a little confusing initially which is more bad game design as sometimes your not sure what is a wall you can grab or a path you can walk on.
So is Street Fighter 2010 The Final Fight a game that I would add and keep in my game collection? Honestly it was actually a tough choice after playing it for a while because sometimes the game would really make you feel great when you get past certain sections but I think the frustration of losing your power-ups and life when getting hit my enemies really pushed me to my limits of wanting to actually keep this in my collection.
But to counter that I do want to mention something very important that for a NES game it does give you unlimited continues which is fantastic but without any of your power ups your still in for a extremely tough time and so for that reason I unfortunately do not recommend Street Fighter 2010 The Final Fight.
