Mega Man X5 Masochist Challenge Part 03 (Damn Near Flawless Execution)

in #gaming8 years ago (edited)

Every now and again I pull a stage like this one off.

Axle the Red's - and Jesus Christ that name is hideous - stage has been one of the more difficult ones to do by far. Some of the added challenge was my own, though since I wanted to do it in the quickest fashion possible.

It may look like all you need to do is speed through and jump every now again to avoid those trap vines, but that's not even close to being true.

Especially on the Extreme difficulty, the timing of those things is hellaciously precise, and definitely took a lot of studying to get right.

In my practice runs, I took hits after hits after hits.

There's really very little room for error.

It really is necessary to pay attention - not only to when to jump, but to the spot from which to jump. And this has to be done a dozen times over in quick succession.

The thing is that you're not supposed to complete this stage without taking your time with the traps. I guess that's what makes it so satisfying, as I feel like I defeated the intended game design.

But there's nothing that an unlimited amount of free time on your hands can't solve, so.

In any case, I'm very proud of this one, I wanted to make it look good, and I think I did. I reach the boss door in just over a minute - and watching the footage, I don't think that much time could have been saved. A second here, a second there, sure. A minute flat would be possible, but I think that's about exactly how well a human player can possibly do.

Also, despite his name, I really dig the boss fight with Axle Rose... I mean Axle the Red. The perfect way to cap off a precision stage like this.

Axle the Red is also effeminate enough to make @jerrybanfield appear masculine. So there's that.

He's challenging, but not unfair. He has multiple gimmicks, including the Split Mushroom/Gemini Man gimmick of creating a duplicate of himself, but it's not too hard to keep track of.

Axle is the kind of Mega Man X boss fight I like: it's crowded at first, but when you really take the time to study it, you learn to see things coming and quickly have his number - but he still maintains a threat.

Oh, yeah. After this stage, there's Dynamo. It's not even worth watching or commenting on, I fought him with my eyes closed. And that's just about the nicest thing I can say about him.

X4-X6 Masochist Challenge:
