The 90's was filled with mascots trying to emulate Sonic the Hedgehog. Let's take a look back at this short-lived era.
The popularity of Sonic the Hedgehog caught the game industry off-guard in the early 90's. The speed of the gameplay and attitude of the anthropomorphic main character spawned a flood of copycats trying to follow in Sonic's blazing fast shoes.
Everyone wanted a piece of the pie, and the next few years introduced many characters trying to ride Sonic's coattails and most vanished as quickly as they arrived. Some of them turned out really great and spawned their own franchises, like Rocket Knight, Earthworm Jim and Crash Bandicoot, but most are long gone. Lets take a look at some of these forgotten characters.
Aero the Acrobat
Because he's a bat. Get it?
Bubsy
Everyone hated Bubsy even before his bland and boring game was released. He just has a punchable face.
Ardy Lightfoot
I think I'm the only one who remembers this character
Punky Skunk
Skunks are pretty edgy, aren't they? I mean, he's wearing a tracksuit!
Rocky Rodent
The winner of the 'Most unpleasant-looking mascot' goes to...
Awesome Possum
Far from Awesome. This is likely the worst game of the bunch, being a 90's 2D sidescroller with an awful framerate
Gex
Gex was like a reptilian version of Bubsy. They even hired a comic to write and voice his dialogue
Zero the Kamizake Squirrel
I'm not sure if this character should be considered racially insensitive or not
