Jogging Simulator Zombie edition - DayZ standalone review

in #gaming8 years ago

Zombie apocalypse, that overused theme in this last decade seems like will never become too old.

I am here to introduce you to DayZ, and I should also explain why the odd title.

This is a wallpaper, yet, it is a game engine screenshot (with a couple of filters on top).

Dayz is a survival game in an open world of 225 km2, considering that getting a vehicle is quite a challenge (if you try to fix one alone) you've no option but to run... Taking you up to 3 hours to just cross it (thus, Jogging simulator).

Lucky for you there's several online maps that will help you navigate the area (if you can read cyrillic; if not, you'll learn quite fast).

There's zombies around, yet, I do have to give the props to the developers for a reason: The first times you play you will probably die of thirst, hunger, diarrhea (you shouldn't have eaten that raw piece of chicken) or septicemia (a severe infection). Watching over your character's status is a must as you start a new character.

Standing your ground awaiting those far away, awaiting the weary in comfort, awaiting the hungry with full stomachs, is mastering strength. Sun Tzu - The Art of War.

The trick to this is: apples
Once you find an apple tree, gather as many as you need to satisfy your hunger and thirst; while taking as many as you can for the road (hopefully you've found some sort of backpack). Whenever you find a new apple tree, do it again. No risks attached!

You'll adore the apple trees and orchards in this game.

People is an issue

If you are daring enough to join one of the public servers prepare to see the worst that humankind can offer you; and actually what would probably happen if a zombie apocalypse (or any other kind of catastrophe) happened: The guys with guns will take advantage of the unarmed. They will shoot you as soon as they see you. Some servers are empty, I'd recommend those for the beginner.
Private servers are a whole different thing, many demand that you role-play at all times and if you break one rule: You get the BanHammer buff.
That way, newcomers can actually get a chance to come across friendly players that will protect them while they get started.

The game is in early access as it catches up with the Arma 2 mod (that one has way more features).

You can get DayZ in the steam store for $34.99 or at G2A starting from $27 (depending on the continent you play from).

Despite that you may spend hours running and scavenging from a really large set of gear this game has to offer, once you find action: You will love it.

(Unless you're taking screenshots like this one).
