RE: Retro Recall: Max Payne – A man in a quest for revenge. In bullet time

in #gaming7 years ago

I remember way back in 2001 when I got my first PC that could play any semblance of a game that wasn't Minesweeper or Solitaire. I think it was WarCraft 3, Diablo 2 and Max Payne that I picked up as my first games for it.

It takes a lot for me to purchase a game before I know anything about it but Max Payne looked simply amazing. I loved the noir aesthetic as well as the graphic novel cutscenes and just how gritty it was. Games like Max Payne were few and far between on consoles at the time and it had a uniquely PC feel. Which is probably another reason I got it.

It's interesting that members of Remedy came from the demoscene. But I guess it makes sense with all the fancy effects they added to their games. It was one of the Remedy employee's faces that they used for Max Payne as well wasn't it?

Yes, it was Sam Lake's face from Remedy on Max Payne. Another one of those "cool", unusual factors for the game :)

Coming from the demoscene actually justifies a lot. These guys were more willing to take risks and try something new than the regular developer. If they failed, at least they gave it their best. I remember getting all excited over Max Payne because it looked like a dream of an action game at the time, and very few games are capable of giving me that feeling.

I haven't played Alan Wake, but this made me think about seeing if that game is still worthwhile nowadays.
