Tunescape: A sandbox for virtual reality

PRESS RELEASE: Tunescape

LAS VEGAS, NV – Step inside a virtual sandbox and start creating to the sound of your favorite music. Tunescape, by independent developer Jimmy Alger, is a virtual reality app which lets you build and animate objects in a space that can then be played back with music. These Tunescapes are saved out as files which can be shared and experienced by others.

Alger has worked solo on Tunescape since April 2015, keeping a day job to pay the bills. When he was let go from that job at the end of September (2017) and failed to find immediate employment, he turned his full focus toward pursuing his dream of completing and releasing Tunescape. Release time has come and Alger says he's ready.

“It's been a long road to get here,” he says, “but I'm confident that I've put together a good piece of software that has the potential to be great.” Releasing as an “Early Access” title on Steam and Oculus digital stores, Tunescape will continue being developed after its initial launch and pricing is set accordingly. Beginning at $4.99, the price will be increased with future updates which contain additional features. Mr. Alger is encouraging customers to buy early and save.

Entirely self-funded, Tunescape has no marketing budget. Alger is hoping to promote the app by getting it into the hands of creative people who can in turn share their creations. “I can tell you that I've put my very best into this app, but it's the Tunescapes themselves that will sell people on the idea.”, remarks Jimmy. “It's a completely new way to experience music. Even songs you've heard a million times before.”

Tunescape will initially be available for the Oculus Rift, with plans to add support for the HTC Vive headset in the near future. Other planned additions include an in-app browser to share Tunescapes, music streaming, and support for motion controllers such as Oculus Touch.

Virtual reality is starting to hit its stride among consumers. Its adoption has been slower and more gradual than many predicted a few years ago. One reason, some say, is the lack of a 'killer app', that one piece of software that everyone just has to have. Some of the best virtual reality experiences made to date haven't been games, but just that: an experience. Tunescape is giving users the ability to create and share their own virtual experience, in a new kind of format.
