Thoughts on modding? (fangames)

Hello Steemians.
There are numerous of fangames are huge. Mods and games are considered 'illegal'
even if the modder wants to bring life into old games.
I also think private servers are a good way to relive the past.
What worries me is that the companies or 'copyright protecton'
prevents creativity. I'd like to here your thoughts on this subject

Pokemon Uranium was a fangame that drew too much attention and the Nintendo Gods shut it down.
What do you think? Should mods and fangames be allowed?
