Wolfenstein Games
Grandfather of all First Person Shooter games is Wolfenstein. Wolfenstein franchise switched from simple old school beginnings when first games were released in 1981. and 1984. (year of my birth) to full on First Person Shooter series after Wolfenstein 3D. Game story is set in an alternate history where Germans won the World War 2 and our hero B.J. Blaskowicz will be fighting for the resistance as the specialist against occult nazi tactics. Over the top shooter action and some really weird creations came from this series and it is worth to look at.
Wolfenstein 3D
Wolfenstein 3D is the reason why today we have so many massive FPS franchises on the gaming market. It all started back in 1992. when this game was released. Invention of First Person Shooter did not go unnoticed as many more games took the same route like Doom, Duke Nukem, Blood, Quake etc. continued with the new gaming revolution. Gameplay was simple enough as we would explore the same looking corridors and shoot through many nazis until we reach the final boss, Hitler himself in robotic suit of armor with miniguns. Welcome to Wolfenstein.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Full reboot of the series started in 2001. as B.J. Blaskowicz went to investigate paranormal division of Nazi Germany and find out that they were experimenting with zombies, this is where Wolfenstein series took more of an Occult route. Blaskowicz got captured and sent to Castle Wolfenstein for interrogation, he escaped and find out about Nazi occult experiments and the plan to resurrect Heinrich I, a legendary and powerful Saxon warlord. Told you, over the top, but very fun.
Wolfenstein 2009
Another entry into Wolfenstein series was another great FPS game with atmospheric locales enemies and fun story. B.J. Blaskowicz is back and this time he got a hold of a medallion that holds some ancient power he intends to use to stop the Nazis around the city of Isenstadt to build a superweapon powered by Black Sun from other dimension. As single player first person shooters go this one will give you plenty of chaos and destruction to partake in with plenty of monsters from other dimension to kill.
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Last game of the series was released in 2014. and the helm of the game development was taken by Bethesda Studios, so you can expect a quality game from The New Order. Set in alternative history of 1960. our experienced hero will again stop the Nazis from world domination. Game picked up decent reviews and offered players more cinematic experience during dialogs. Gameplay changed with addition of covers, dual wielding weapons and stealth. As always there is no shortage of destruction and strange enemies you can take down. Wolfenstein is one of the those fun singleplayer series that you will always come back to once you experience all the FPS action and over the top story.
Best shooter gameplay in my opinion. 2006 and 2009 were the best. Not the New Order, though.
My favorite is Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Every game is decent enough to play.
