Top 10 First Person Shooters

in #gaming8 years ago

Most gamers like this genre of games the most and generally it is the most lucrative for developers to make. There are few massive franchises on the market like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor and Battlefield, those games won't be included on this list. I will go for more classic FPS games that I've played over the years. One thing this games have in common is their hunger for hardware, any new release will require of you to buy new GPU's and CPU's. Some of the games i liked won't make it on the list but were close like Kingpin, Soldier of Fortune, Alien vs Predator, Red Faction, Jedi Outcast, Portal 2, Bioshock, Bulletstorm, Singularity, etc. Remembering this games is a true trip down the memory lane. So here we go.

1. Half Life

One of the main draws game can have is the immersion. Half Life is the best example of that. This FPS was so atmospheric with main character a scientist Gordon Freeman that worked in secret facility of Black Mesa, suddenly strange alien occurrences started to happen. He took his famous crowbar and started adventure like no other. Half Life 2 was even more successful but original had everything, great multiplayer and great mods.

2. Unreal

When this game was released it was so strange and graphics were the best at the time, you had to have VOODOO 3 GPU! You found yourself on a strange world where strange and aggressive aliens named Skaarj were fighting you and the natives Nali. Strange weapons and quick combat made this game great. Later Unreal Tournament was created and we all know how big that game was.

3. Quake 2

Good old Stroggs in bleak world filled with grey colors and cyborg destruction. Fun fact about this game were those Stroggs, each stronger than the other with more Hp and bigger firepower. You needed to balance the weapons and survivability. Also quick reflexes would help. This game had great multiplayer, I even played this game on play station against my brother and cousin back in the day.

4. Counter Strike 1.6

Originally this was a mode for Half Life that gained wings and made it as one of the most played competitive Esports in the world today. You can choose to play as a terrorist or counter terrorist, each faction had it's objectives and set of weapons. Skill based game where you got better when you played more.

5. Far Cry

This one was of those hungry for hardware game, at the time those graphics were godlike. The water, the nature, everything looked perfect back then. You found yourself on an island where strange cyborgs started to appear and you had to fight for your life. As shooters go this was hands down one of the best ones.

6. Duke Nukem 3D

Back to the classics, this was one of the first PC games I've played. Duke had the charm and the grit to be the star, all those one liners when he kills those pigs were priceless, multiplayer was fun and as a kid i had tons of fun playing this game. Duke Nukem rocks!

7. Metro Last Light

Post apocalyptic Moscow where humans live deep underground in metro stations. Atmosphere outside is deadly for them and there live strange mutated creatures. This game had special game mechanics with low amount of ammo, you had to scavenge and use tactics to survive and use breathing masks that had timers when you go outside. This game is one of the most immersive ones I've played.

8. Stalker: Shadows of Chernobyl

Open world exploration of zones around Chernobyl. Post apocalyptic kind of game where you had to explore the land and survive that harsh environment. You meet all sorts of factions in your travels and attacked by many mutants in your goal to reach the center where your wish can become reality, perhaps.

9. Doom 3

This game was cursed for me, when i was going to pick the game up i ended up in a traffic accident. Nobody was hurt but that game started with a bad omen, that does not mean it was bad though. Game had that spooky atmosphere and great visceral action. One hellish ride that was.

10. Evolve

One of the new breed of First Person Shooters is Evolve. It is a multiplayer game where 4 players hunt monster that is also controlled by one player. Monster can evolve into 3 stages and each one is stronger. Hunters have special sets of weapons trying to counter the monster and track him down. Fun concept and the game is Free to Play on Steam so give it a shot.

Very good list @moon32walker!
I Started like this:

  • Duke Nukem 3D
  • Quake 2
  • Half Life and Counter in the same period
  • Doom 3
  • Metro
  • Stalker
But the one the I like the most was Doom 3, this game will have a special place in my heart!
I liked the game and I liked the movie too !

Yeah those are all classics. Wherever you place them they would fit fine.

I approve all these games, except Evolve.

Had to include one new fps, i kinda like the game. It is quite innovative and free to play model is always cool. Those games tend to get updated and improved a lot.

For FOSS Gnu/Linux enthusiast I recommend https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube_2:_Sauerbraten (available in most default repositories), it's really underrated and hell-of-fun, they got some certain things just right.
