Gaming developers like to explore World War 2 and there is an abundance of WW2 themed games. There is something special about that black part of our civilization history and can still capture our imaginations about horrific consequences of war. But I'm talking about games here, fun times for the modern folks who are lucky enough to live in some 1st world county and can relax in front of their PC's or Consoles and shoot from that Thompson machine gun. Here are some of the best WW2 games out there.

Commandos 2

Commandos is a tactical strategy game where you command a squad of few specialized soldiers and complete the missions all over the globe. Graphically improved from also great 1st part of the series Commandos 2 was a true joy to play. Diverse maps and objectives made this game interesting from start to finish. One time you would dive in some tropical sea, next time you would be disarming V2 rockets in the middle of enemies infested base. Classic.

Sudden Strike

RTS game with deep tactical gameplay, this one relied more on your skills as a commander. Every tank and unit had it's counters and range. For example this is a game where mortars and other long range artillery had the biggest impact on the game outcome. You could also send bombing runs to clear your opponents artillery positions so you can imagine all the rock paper scissor gameplay.

Company of Heroes

In many ways one of the best Real Time Strategy games ever. This game brought so many innovations to the strategy games genre with the cover systems, tanks had realistic armor damage, for example tank would take different amounts of dmg depending how it was positioned. Company of Heroes 2 improved in all that and is still played on steam servers. 

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

WW2 game that was very popular because it came out at the time of Saving Private Ryan and the game had similar movie like start of the game where you would land on Normandy beach and relive all that horror. Shooting aspect of the game was great and this game started the war of franchises.

Call of Duty

Direct competitor to Medal of Honor games were Call of Duty games, today we all know who won, but at the time of this game release they were equally good. Call of Duty offered great singleplayer campaign and multiplayer games that are still being played in some lan gaming old school gatherings.
