The Best RTS Expansions

in #gaming8 years ago

Game expansions can give a breath of fresh air to our favorite games and prolong the life of that game. Expansions are normally priced half of the original game price and can give very nice boost to the game with new story, new units and systems as I will mention in this RTS expansion list. There is no better gaming feeling when fresh expansion comes out and face lifts your favorite game. This list will include some of the best RTS expansions ever. Here we go.

Winter Assault

This is amazingly popular expansion for my favorite RTS game Dawn of War, in original we finally had that much needed Warhammer game and this expansion improved everything. Winter Assault introduced brand new campaign where our races are trying to salvage big titan and in doing so they awaken sleeping Necrons, a race of undead metallic warriors. Expansion also introduced Imperial guard for the 1st time, and those guys are the cannon fodder for the Warhammer40k galaxy.

Frozen Throne

Epic conclusion of Warcraft 3 story came with this expansion, Prince Arthas becoming Lich King, Illidan banishment and all that Jazz were included in this expansion. Blizzard also introduced new units that changed the meta and included brand new interesting heroes. Truly masterful expansion.

Yuri's Revenge

Command&Conquer Red Alert 2 had it all, great and addictive real time strategy gameplay, interesting factions, real time acted cut scenes and epic music pieces. Expansion introduced another story line with Yuri, a bad guy who can time travel. Whole new faction was in this and suffice it to say, I had great fun with this one.

Brood War

Starcraft was groundbreaking in many ways, one of the first Esports ever, interesting universe and races, and many other nice features. Expansion introduced new units that changed the whole game, for example zerg Lurkers, plant two or three of them and observe how they decimate unprepared opponents. There is some talk that HD version of Starcraft is coming soon so keep your eyes opened.

Yeah something is cooking in Blizzard basements. Blizzcon is coming soon and I'm sure we will see some details there.

Was expecting either Age of Empires II: Age of Kings or Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts to be here, too. Cool article, though. I couldn't agree more about the selections. :)

I might do part 2 later :)
