The Best Pirate Themed Games

With the return of one of the best TV series Black Sails I thought it would be a good idea to write something about the best pirate themed games. As always in gaming, pirate games can stand as it's own genre and there are quite a lot of franchises revolved around this theme. Pirate games are all about tropic islands, ship against ship battles, pirate way of life and always compelling big piles of gold. No wonder why this theme is always coming back no matter in what format it is, movies, TV series or games. Drink some rum and join me in remembering some of the best pirate games.

Risen 2: Dark Waters

From the makers of Gothic series, Piranha Bytes, came another series with the same gameplay mechanics set on many islands players can explore. First Risen game was not too heavy on pirate elements, later developers realized that it is the best choice for them to adopt full on Pirate theme and they did in their second and third game. Risen 2 was great in all pirate elements except ship combat. It is a RPG game with character development where our hero starts from nothing and builds his crew in attempt to beat the primal forces. There are some fantasy elements to this game that adds to immersion like voodoo magics and ancient beasts and titans threatening to consume all. 

Pirates of the Caribbean

Originally this game was supposed to be named Sea Dogs 2 as the developers changed the title trying to earn more cash by changing the name to one of the most popular movies at the time. One of the rare connections with the movie is the ship Black Pearl we get a chance to engage by the end of the game. Captain Nathaniel Hawk is our hero trying to recapture British colony from the invading French and he will do so by recruiting his new crew and increase in power as the game progresses. There are two gameplay parts of this game, island adventuring and ship combat. Both aspects of the game are done great and great captn. Jack Sparrow would be pleased.

Sid Meier's Pirates 2004.

This is a remake of the game based on popular Pirates from 1987. Sid Meier's games always bring high dose of quality and this game is no different. There are many different elements to this game and every element is it's own mini game, you can expect almost every activity possible one pirate can partake in. There is World sailing, trading, ship combat, land combat, capturing cities, sneaking, fighting big name pirates and even ballroom dancing. This is a game you will enjoy playing.

Monkey Island Series

To pick one game as the best from this series would be very a hard choice, that's why I'll just place the whole series on this list. Guybrush Threepwood's adventures will compel you to always come back for more. This point and click adventure series can get your brain melt during some of the hard puzzles and laugh out loud during some hilarious dialogues and happenings. It seems to me that some elements of Jack Sparrow were made to imitate Guybrush Threepwood the mightiest pirate that ever lived. Villain  LeChuck would agree.
