The Best Games That Started as Mods
Mods are player based modifications of any game that supports them. Gamers from time to time stumble upon a gold mine with this mods and sometimes even the developer companies like Blizzard can't see the potential in them, that's how Blizzard lost the rights for Dota and had to make their own moba game that is struggling right now. While Blizzard had some other plans Moba genre exploded and became number 1 of the most played games for last several years. Isn't it strange that 2 most played games today started out as player based mods? Those game are Counter Strike Go and Dota 2.
Dota 2
Defense of the Ancients was originaly mod for starcraft that got expanded in Warcraft 3 map editor, that mod was wildly popular back in the days and today it is most payed E sport on the planet. Blizzard didn't care and they lost the rights and now valve owns the Dota and is making millions on Blizzard's bad call. But Blizzard will manage.
Counter Strike: GO
This was the mod for one of the best FPS shooters of all time Half Life and it is based on Counter Terrorists and Terrorists that are trying to beat the objectives or wipe each other in the process, simple concept that is making millions. Before there were character skins that were always free, today you must pay for those skins and that is how companies that are making these games are making most of their money.
Team Fortress 2
This game started out as a mod for Quake that got improved with Half Life, yes another Half Life mod, and there are even more games that were originally made from source engine. Half Life truly was revolutional not just because it was a great game, also because so many mods were made on that engine.
Natural Selection 2
Another mode based on Half Life engine that was a hybrid between RTS and FPS where you could give commands as a marine commander from RTS point of view and would give your troops orders or items and you would fight against aliens that were also controlled by players. Natural Selection 2 is still played on steam servers.
