Spellforce 3 Review

Spellforce 3 is a RTS/RPG hybrid with heavy emphasis on singleplayer campaign where you will get to experience an epic fantasy story set in the world of Eo. Our main protagonist is a Wolf Guard member sent to explore a new type of plague killing everyone it touches, he will gather a lot of companions during his travels and will have to forge an unlikely alliances with every race of the world of Eo.
The maps in Spellforce 3 are huge, you will literally spend multiple hours exploring them and fighting your always aggressive enemy forces, all while trying to manage your heroes, base, army and economy. Sometimes it can get overwhelming managing everything efficiently, specially if you play on harder difficulty setting. I do like the difficulty and that is easily the strongest aspect of the game.

Real Time Strategy elements are great, you can pick between three races, Humans, Orks and Elves, all having their own tech trees and stronger tiers of units. Units have multiple layers of complexity, they have different types of attack and different types of armor, 8 to be exact, and you will notice some units are usless against the other ones if you don't pay attention to details. RPG elements are very interesting, your heroes get to chose their schools of magic and warfare, with every new level the stats and power of the skills will increase. You can also find items that will increase your hero power drastically and give special abilities like special summons and elemental attacks. Both RTS and RPG aspects of the game work excellent together.

Adventuring is another great aspect of the game, after base building and completing the map there are some hero dungeons and standard RPG questing zones where your hero needs to talk to people and get quests in order to progress further. During those moments you will fight neutral monsters that drop great loot you can use. The Creeps and neutral monsters come in all shapes and sizes, and you will fight the undead, all sorts of beastry, elementals and even dragons. There is a lot to do in this complex game. Unfortunately in some closed spaces camera can get hard to manage and it is easy to miss some loot and hidden locations.

I feel Spellforce 3 is a mixed bag of goodies, sometimes you will get what you want and sometimes you won't. At times this game looks spectacular and it truly is one of the best looking RTS games ever, RPG and RTS mechanics are also great, but the other not so good parts of the game are it's annoying camera and story quest bugs that bugged me the most in the end. I do like the game, it is a game worth exploring and it brings a lot of nostalgic feels, but those small grievances I mentioned unfortunately won't get the game too high on the review charts.
