PC Game Review - Grim Dawn

in #gaming8 years ago (edited)

Introduction

Grim Dawn is an Action Role Playing Game like Diablo games. This game is a spiritual successor of Titan's Quest. Game took the same system and doubled it as Jay Willson used to say for Diablo 3 news back in the day. Grim Dawn as the name would sugest is a grimdark game with dark tone and art style, something like original Diablo games. Playing this game puts you in unease because of that grim Lovecraftian atmosphere, you know at every corner death awaits in shape of some monstosity. A true single player ARPG experience with unlimited replayability and here is why.

Gameplay

Your character wakes up on a hanging tree with villager folks around you trying to execute you, they think you are some kind of Aether monster, but there is some humanity left in you and they spare your life and you promise to help them figure out this Aetherial attack that wiped out almost everyone. You take some quests and start adventuring.

This game lets you chose between 6 main classes

What is specific around character creation in this game's multiclass system, you can choose one of 6 classes and when you reach level 10 you can pick a 2nd class, for example my Conjurer is a mix between Shaman and Ocultist. I use auto attack embedded with chain lightning to clear mobs and use a summon to help me tank the monsters. Nice little combination for late game Elite difficulty.

What can really shape your character are the items of different quality which can change you stats and give your character some extra abillities. As you can see with this screenshot there are quite a lot of options for you to chose and your imagination and creativity is the only limit on how you will create your character. Oh yeah, there are guns in this game.

As you progress trough the game you will find shrines which can give you devotion points that let your character to be even more specialized.

Constellations tab where you spend your devotion points.

Slowly you will level your character and when you complete normal difficulty the game has just begun. Next is Elite difficulty and here is where things get spicy, your hero loses experience if he dies often so you can stuck forever if you have ineffective character. This is why it is important to have a plan in this game if you want to play on harder difficulties. Once you have you character sorted out this game is very fun in every aspect.

Final Words

Grim Dawn does not have economy system or ladder like Diablo 3 or Path of Exile mainly because it is a singleplayer game where there are tons of build options available to the player. It is hard to properly balance so many options, that is why Grim Dawn can give you freedom to create a true unbalanced monster if you invest time in the game. I think this game will always be installed on my hard disk and that says a lot.

Final Score: 92/100 Lord have mercy!
