Gaming Retrospective - System Shock 2

in #gaming7 years ago

System Shock 2, as most of the gamers from the 90's era know is one of the best RPG's of all time. For some younger generations this is a game worth exploring and immerse yourself into if you don't mind older graphics style. Cyberpunk is present in every corner of this game with hacking, robotics, space, cyber enhancements and main villain of the game, popular murderous AI named Shodan. She will make your blood ice up at times during exploration of derelict ship you found yourself in to. Crew of the ship is mostly dead and the remnants are zombified creatures that will hunt you down at the moment they see you.

Your goal as a survivor and enhanced human is to survive the inhospitable ship and figure out what is Shodan planing to do and why did she became like that. Every great RPG has many tools players can use to beat the game. In System Shock 2 you can be almost anything imaginable and replayability is a strong feature of this game. You can become a stealthy hacker, rambo with big guns, or you can use many psionic abilities like temporal manipulation and cryospells. Horror atmosphere is another strong aspect of the game and whenever you're being chased by something monstruous futuristic music will start playing adding to the immersion. System Shock 2 is a game like no other, I strongly urge you to check it out.

This game creeped out the hell out of me. The shrill voices. EEEk

Very scary RPG, when you think you killed every zombie, there are three more just around the corner to swarm you :)

I do not know whether I would go so far as "one of the best RPG's of all time".
I loved the game at the time and I believe it helped propel RPG's to the specularity we have now.

Going back and thinking about the game, it created a very good groundwork for Interface Management, suspense and narrative...

But does it stack up to some of the later breakthroughs in RPG's like the Elder Scrolls series? Or even D&D series (though lately, they suck)?

One of the bests, sure why not I say :) Many games took that groundwork, from original Deus Ex to recent Prey.
Not saying that Elder Scrolls are not great, both are in the Mount Olympus of RPG's.

As I say, for it's time and innovation it certainly deserves to stand in the hall of fame for gaming breakthroughs, but the game itself is not as endearing as more recent titles like Neverwinter nights that was released slightly after.

If you asked me about Neverwinter, I can tell you all about the lore, history and story of the game...

I really struggle to remember much about the game direction from System Shock, even though I played it to death.

It all depends on your personal preferences, some people like fantasy more, for me if there is a good story and atmosphere mixed with excellent gameplay, theme is not that important. I too know a lot about Neverwinter Nights, I played every game in the series including expansions :)

I think I have the enhanced edition on GOG.

Great piece of evergreen software to have.
