Gaming Retrospective - Kohan: Immortal Sovereings

in #gaming7 years ago

Kohan is a fantasy RTS game released in 2001. by TimeGate Studios. Game is set in a world of Khaldun where immortals named Kohan live and their Ceyah counterparts, evil immortals started awakening and started to mass their armies to conquer the world. It is up to the leader of Kohan, Darius Javidan to stop them.

Most interesting feature of this game are the immortal Kohan warriors and mages that can be killed in battle and revive later from their amulets. Kohan are the key factor of any battle and they can gain levels. Awakened, Enlightned and Ascended, every level would increase the hero power drastically.

Once you find and unlock your immortals it is time to build your cities and settlements and start recruiting unit companies. Every company is composed by three lines, center , support and front line. Players can create many different companies with various strengths and weaknesses, and engage them in all out war with the Ceyah armies. There are six different races in the game with their own special units, The Mareten, Gauri, Drauga, Haroun, Slaan, Undead and Shadow. Once you formed your companies you can start exploring your surroundings and clear the map from neutral monsters and in their lairs find new Kohan amulets, you can retreat wounded units to your area of control and replenish them, slowly build up your cities and attack the enemy.

Resources are produced in settlements and mines for main resources wood, stone, iron, mana and gold. This game sometimes resembles the 4X games with it's complex empire, hero, companies and resource management system. It really is one of my favorite old RTS games.

If you like old games and somehow skipped this one, just by reading this retrospective you can see the great abundance of features you can experience in this game.

I really liked that game but it was quite uncomfortable to manage.

It had that strange mix of real time strategy and complex management. I played it way too much so I got used to that system and mastered it.
