Gaming Retrospective - Battle Realms

in #gaming7 years ago

Battle Realms is a RTS game from 2001 best known for it's oriental influences. There are 4 clans in the game and every one is themed on low fantasy oriental myths mixed with gunpowder technology and some little bit of magic. Every clan is unique with very imaginative sets of units and abilities. Those Clans are: Good guys The Dragon, Evil guys The Serpent, Magic users The Lotus and nature loving hordes The Wolf.

As RTS mechanics go, this game had one of the most unique ones. In almost every RTS game peasant units are used for resource gathering and building construction, in this game peasants are also used for training into fighting units. For example, you had to send your peasant to Dragon Dojo and he would become a warrior, different buildings give different roles. Players could also use heroes that spend jin/jang resource. Battle Realms is one of those good games that never had a sequel, it's a shame because this kind of imaginative RTS game would be very fun to play today.

I think the biggest problem of todays RTS games is the fact that they all want to become an e-sport.
But most people who loved RTS games didn't play them competitively, they loved to play with their friends for shits and giggles.

I was actually thinking about the same thing. So many RTS games want to become something like Starcraft 2, but that can't be done, they must do their own thing. Recently Dawn of War 3 tried that and it is not going too good for them at all.

Wow, blast from the past. I totally forgot this game existed! :D

Older obscure games are my speciality :)

I have never seen this game. But I love AoE it was my favorite :)

Tnx, following you back. I wrote about AoE before, you can scroll my old blogs and check it out.

Yeah with a bit smoothing out and some comfort options this could have been really great.

Hoping to see a sequel to this, such a great RTS back then.
