Gaming Retrospective - Alpha Centauri

in #gaming7 years ago

Civilization is one of the everlasting franchises that recently had Beyond Earth Spinoff where we move from Earth to an alien planet, but 15 years before Beyond Earth there was one "small" game called Alpha Centauri. Predecessor of the spinoff and one of the best strategy games of all times, Alpha Centauri was a force to be reckoned with. Game is set in 22nd century on a planet Chiron in Alpha Centauri star system where 7 factions are competing for the planets resources. As 4X games go, this is one of the classics that was revolutionary at the time, and one of the Firaxis Games master achievements.

Game is a direct continuation of Civilization 2 colonization victory. There are many new features in the game like social engineering, alien native life, climate, customizable units, some new diplomatic and spy options. Factions differ in ideological lookout on life and give decent amount of replayability. Graphics are certainly outdated, but at the time of the game release in 1999 were quite ok. Alien Crossfire expansion added new factions and expanded the game with more gameplay options. Alpha Centauri is one of the best 4X games of all times worth checking out if you like retro games and somehow missed this gem.

Good ol Sid :)

I remember taking my netbook to school and playing the original civ on it, as it was the only game that ran well there :D

Better than playing minesweeper that's for sure :)
Typos are real today!

well :D nothing bad with a game of minesweeper :D once I finally (after a few years) understood the concept, it was quite fun

I still don't understand the concept, never tried to :D

ha :D essentially the number on the tile tells you how many mines are there around that tile. And you need to use the information to figure out where the mines are :)

There are tons of guides on youtube

Yeah, I'll look them some other time perhaps :)

Its fun to go back and play games from the past, they remind me of all the things going on in that time period.

When the world was less crazy.

THIS!

I wanted and forgot to do this, although it's not strictly a Games of Yore.

In my eyes the best "Civ" of all. Very differently feeling factions, gameplay changing a lot in the phases of the game because of terraforming and the PSI stuff.
Then the military. Great variety that really worked together (and against :D). Not to mention the possibility of flooding an enemy city per terraforming or making it rain on your tiles and dry as hell on theirs.

Forgetting Alpha Centauri is like forgetting your first love :P Terraforming and alien mind worms psi attacks, fun times.
