Dawn of War 3 Developer Insights

in #gaming8 years ago (edited)

While the game preloads on my drive it is a good opportunity to explore a development cycle of the game and see the struggles of the dev team, the bottom line is that all of their hard work might be in vain if the audience don't accept the game as they envisioned it. Dow 3 might be great in the long run, but I predict first few weeks after release will be rough because people will find out that multiplayer is very demanding, relatively easy to learn, hard to master. Most of the gamers today are used to more casual games and when being exposed to hardcore competitive multi units micro management and economy struggles, this game might be a tough pill to swallow.

Just try to play few multiplayer games against human opponent and by the end of the game your brain will melt. No game can activate your brain computing power as Real Time Strategy games can, anyone who played them will know the feeling. RTS games are at the crossroads and Dawn of War 3 can be the standard bearer, or not, the audience will decide.

I think the main demographic for this title - people who love warhammer 40k - are used to hard-to-master concepts :)

Question is, will it be fun? Since there are so many W40 games, but not a lot of them are really good.

I played the multiplayer beta and the game is so much fun. Will it attract new gamers not familiar with RTS games, it is hard to tell. Only few of WH40k games were good, DoW series is the best by far. Space Marine was decent, and new Eternal Crusade Multiplayer Arena has the potential. DoW 3 has the potential to be RTS game of the year, we shall see.

You don't need to know 40K to play DoW. It's like jumping into Starcraft as far as discovering background lore, only there's a lot more if you want to take it to the next level.

It will be hard to learn all the mechanics from DoW 3 for players used to play casual games. Game is way harder than Starcraft 2 for example, and casual gamers play mobas, card games and FPS games these days.

RTS is just too stressful for me :)

They are, the victory is so much sweeter then. Knowing that you annihilated your opponent by playing faster and using superior tactics is very empowering. Losing is complete opposite experience, this kind of humbling and empowering feeling you can get only by playing RTS games.
