Age of Wonders Games

Age of Wonders is a Fantasy Turn Based Strategy game series. Another one of the game series that drew inspiration from Heroes of Might and Magic games. Age of Wonders games feature many mythological beasts and races and that is one of the main draws for this series. Franchise is rebooted in 2014. 11 years since the last game came out, so we can expect to see more of this excellent game series.

Age of Wonders

First game was released in 1999 and had 12 different races. It is a game with many distinct rules. There is a town where you recruit your units and big adventuring map where you can fight, loot, and crush your enemies. There are two main resources, gold for units and mana for casting spells. There is also an alignment system when certain alignments will be more friendly or aggressive towards you. This is a game filled with content and you can have many hours of enjoyment playing it.

Age of Wonders 2: The Wizard's Throne

Second game in the series was released in 2002 and with better graphics and some improvements to the battle system with smaller maps that quickens battle scenarios. Global Wizard spells are introduced and can be cast only in areas of player borders map control, makes it easier to defend and harder to attack. Shadow Magic was originally intended to be an expansion for Age of Wonders 2 ended up being standalone product.

Age of Wonders 3

Last game in the series is a successful reboot of the series. Game added many new features like Hero leveling, research various different technologies and spells with every race having it's own specialities. Every race has that special end game super units that can win the game but it takes time to build them. Very detailed graphics, interesting gameplay and learning to play as different races can get you hooked. Just writing about this game pushed me to install it again.

Yeah the game winning super units...
That is in fact the only problem I have with this game series: The balance between the tier of units. One "best" unit should not be able to win against an 8 stack of tier 1 units.

Well, depends if it is a singleplayer game, then I have no problem with OP units, it is fun to use them. When it comes to multiplayer then yes, it is a problem, avoid multiplayer in those situations.
