666 Steem Power - Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls Review

in #gaming8 years ago

Just as I'm closing up to that magic number i found no better way to express myself than by reviewing Diablo 3, a devils game. Diablo franchise has had it's ups and downs, mostly ups but lately with Diablo 3 downs. Game has been released 4 years ago and with expansion Reaper of Souls it is considerably better.

Gameplay

Diablo 3 is an ARPG (action role playing game), you pick 6 classes and go slaughter throngs of demons of different sizes shapes and forms. In doing so you level up and increase your power, you collect nice and shiny gear that improve your skills and with that your character gets to be even more effective at monster slaying. Diablo 3 has always been a beautiful game with smooth animations and optimization, the main problem of the game was lack of meaningful skill development, with just one click you could change your character completely. Itemization was also a problem where Legendary items (the best ones in the game) were terrible and everything was based around auction house.

Auction House

That feature was the games downfall, yes you could earn real money by finding strong item and selling it on the auction house, but that made the game grindy and items only had more stats with nothing special about them. Wizards would carry 2 handed swords, Wands would roll with dexterity or strength affixes which was a terrible game design. After 2 years of heavy profiting from percentages of auction house sells Bli$$ard finally decided to scrap that abomination and try to keep the game afloat by firing its lead game designer Jay Willson, and hiring Josh Mosqueira as a new lead designer for the expansion.

Now we had completely different game than it was on the launch. We had New story act which was by far the best one in the game, new character class Crusader (pimped up Paladin) Adventuring mode where you don't have to play the story mode, instead you can play in any act completing the bounties and getting that extra loot. Crafting was improved, Kanai's Cube was introduced, an item where you can extract legendary affix and include it in Kanai's Cube, fun new mechanic, it opens a ton of new build options.

When you level up your character to lvl 70 you can earn even more XP with the Paragon system, you spend those extra points into any stat you like, paragon leveling is endless, it just gets more slow to level up after you reach lets say paragon 1000. Legendary items finally had that coolness about them, they would modify your skills, not just passively increase your stats. Set items became go to for this game, for example Barbarian's Raekor set for charging would boost that skill way up in dmg, so you would hunt for that final set piece like a crazy person.

New feature in expansion were Rifts and Greater Rift, randomized dungeons where you can find few new things, new gems that you can place in ring and amulet sockets. Those gems can level up by completing the rifts and they modify your character greatly, when you beat the boss of the Rift you get Blood Shards, new currency that you  exchange on your Town Gambler Kadala. One of the main source of fining great gear is Kadala.

Final Words

If you haven't played Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls now is the perfect time to jump in, forget those bad reviews from the past. As i mentioned everything is improved and this game is still one of the best ARPG's on the market today.  I won't give the game score more than 90 cause like i said it is 4 years old, but everything else is great now. Get some friends in and go slaughter some evil!

Final Score: 85/100
