Gamers will spent money on the strangest stuff.... PUBG story of a $1k hoodie.

in #gaming6 years ago (edited)

Today I was playing a bit of PlayerUnknown's battleground (PUBG), if you know what this is skip the the next paragraph , where the premise of the game is to be the last alive out of the 100 people playing in your game. There are 8 game modes: 4 man squad, 2 man duo, and solos with both Forced First Person mode (FFP), and a mode that allows you to use first or third person mode. Most people prefer the FFP as it's a little more competitive; because in third person you can "corner peak"; use the third person camera to look around corners before your character model could actually look around the corner. There are 100 people per game that are loaded into a plane and then dropped over an island; the play area is incrementally made smaller by a circle of "gas" that eats away at your health the longer you are in it and the later in the game that it is.

There is a lot of walking in the video between the six and the fourteen minute mark, in case you want to skip ahead to the gun fights.

At the end of each game you are awarded points on a combination of your placement: how long you last, how many people you killed, and how much damage you did during the game. With these points you can get a random crate and in these crates you are able to get cosmetic gear for your character model. These crates increase in price depending on how many you have purchased that week. The crates are also fully tradable on the steam market so there are a lot of people that sell them and do not even care about the cosmetics in the game, as they have very little to do with the how you play the game, the only impact that it has is how visible you are to other people. The newest crate requires you to pay $2.50 USD to open it, because it will contain the highest value due to the limited supply on the market thus far.

This is the desperado crate that has a lock on it signifying that it is the newest and therefore will need a key to unlock, as you can see, there are only cosmetic items that can be unlocked. The colors on the bottom of each item dictate the rarity of the item; red being the rarest, and the light blue being the most common.

On the Steam Market place you can see there are things that are sold for a LOT of money (this is real life money in USD); this is the top end of what is available for you to purchase, most are high price due to the low availability of the items.

I bring all of this up because some of these items have some VERY high values, but they are very rare. The desperado crate was at roughly $5.00 yesterday and $3.41. today. Due to the increased supply, because of how long the crate has been available, it has been going down . Today I got my first desperado crate and since the price was going down; I opened it; for the first time in the 500+ hours I have played in this game (yeah I know that's a lot of time "wasted" , that's another post), I received something decent out of the crate.

Of course I am going to sell this as soon as possible. Steam makes you wait a week to sell any items due to them wanting to protect your account. Someone could hack your account and sell all of your valuable items, as they can make a lot of money if they get the right account.

The main point that I am trying to make is that gamers spend money on the strangest things. The last two images are the current value for the hoodie found in my crate, the price trends and the available supply (3) and the demand (over 4K). There are both buy and sell bids for these items, meaning there is someone that has over 800 dollars reserved for an in game item that does do ANYTHING to improve their chances of winning; it only makes them look different.

While it's hard for me to comprehend that people would spend this much money on an in game item that is cosmetic only, I fully support these types of transactions in video games, to include the purchasing of the crates and keys. As long as it does not cross into something that helps you win in a multiplayer game, it is not pay to win "P2W" and I support it.

It is crazy to think that you can make 1,000 USD from playing a video game, but then it isn't too hard to accept when you consider Steemit and what can be made here for a simple blog post.

I love playing games that have real world applications. PUBG has small squad tactics and friendly fire is on. That allows people to learn a little, but of course it isn't the same as training IRL.

Congratulations on the lucky crate!

Friendly fire.. you can see an example of that in the video that I tagged in it, a guy cough cough ran in front of me while I was trying to kill the two guys that had been downed.

Greed is the number one killer. When I saw those crates, I got all excited and lost all sensible control. haha
