Crimsonland Android Game Review

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

Hello fellow steemian, hope you are having a wonderful time on steemit, my last game review was UnderWorld Empire developed by Gaea Mobile Limited . Today game review will be Crimsonland developed by 10tons ltd.

Crimsonland is the perfect answer to players that want to bring back the old memories of running and gunning. Crimsonland is a top-down shooter from 10tons and Reflexive Arcade that throws you into the pit with aliens, zombies, spiders, and ghosts; the objective being to blow them to smithereens using an arsenal that includes rocket launchers, ray guns, assault rifles, flamethrowers, plasma weapons, and even automatic shotguns. Crimsonland kicks things off with a bang, bringing intense, fast-paced, explosive top-view shooter action to android. This actually was released for PC and PS Vita before being ported to iOS and android, but the mobile adaptation is phenomenal regardless.

Creating your own scenery

It would be a stretch to say Crimsonland has top of the line visuals, but they are rewarding to say the least. Each level starts out with a pretty bare wasteland, and maybe a few objects here and there. The color scheme of the map will change each chapter, but it’s pretty much always the same empty space with the same color — until you start taking out aliens. Within a few seconds, you’re able to paint the floor red with the blood of your fallen enemies. The blood actually splatters really well, and the mayhem/bullets are very impactful. Your character never really changes throughout the entire game, but your arsenal of weapons will change regularly. There are 30 different weapons in the game, each with it’s own very unique visual effect when firing. Not to mention all of the power-ups that are randomly dropped by enemies, and bring a whole other level of destruction to the map.

@mayowadavid

It might also be nice to see a small one pixel sized border around your power-up timers (yellow text by your character), but that’s not a huge deal. Even though there’s some very minor issues, there’s also plenty of different enemies to encounter and defeat, and on top of that the game runs extremely smooth. I never experienced any lag on my iPad 3, and I’d imagine it looks even better with an A8 processor. One final note about the graphics, is it just me or do some of the menus in this game look exactly like the menus in Modern Combat 5: Blackout?

Game Play

The variety of weapons (you start with a pistol, and can acquire anything from a rocket launcher to a machine gun to a flamethrower), sheer number of "perks" (bonuses you get based on your experience points, which include being able to damage enemies by simply targeting them, or replacing your current weapon, or even occasionally "exploding" to damage enemies), and seemingly endless number of levels make this game worth picking up.

@mayowadavid

Each level in the game has the same goal, defeat all enemies. You usually start out with a pistol, although later there are some levels that start you out with a more powerful weapon (from a rocket launcher, machine gun to a flamethrower) — and the first enemy you kill usually drops a weapon anyways. You can only carry one weapon at a time, so you’ll need to be careful to avoid other weapons if you are holding the one you want to use. They are dropped randomly (unless it’s a new gun), so you don’t always get to use the most optimal weapon for the scenario.

There is a very lengthy campaign in Crimsonland, which spans over six chapters of 10 levels each. None of the levels are all that long, as some can be completed in a minute or less, but others can take a while — especially when they involve a plethora of enemy spawn hubs that you need to take out. Even after you complete all 60 levels, it opens up the next tier of difficulty, and then again a third time. Re-playing the game’s campaign definitely has an appeal, but it’s not quite as entertaining when you aren’t still unlocking weapons and perks.

@mayowadavid

From the completion of the very first level, you start to unlock new stuff. There are a total of 30 weapons and 55 perks, although half of the perks are unlocked to start out with. You’ll unlock one or the other with every level you complete, and eventually everything by the time you complete the campaign on Normal. A huge part of the enjoyment you get from playing campaign, is seeing what weapon they’ll give out next. In the beginning it’s mostly standard assault rifles, shotguns, etc. but later on you’ll get different kinds of RPGs and other heavy weaponry.

Game Mode

After you’re all done with the campaign, or even if you just want to take a break from it, there are five other playable game modes in Crimsonland to enjoy. The first, and probably the most fun, is Survival. In this mode you gain EXP by killing enemies, and every time you level up, you get to select one of four different perks. You’ll still pick up weapons and power-ups, but getting perks that compliment each other is extremely important. Rush Mode is another fun bonus mode, where you are given an assault rifle with unlimited ammo and you never need to reload, but there are tons of enemies and no new weapons or power-ups.
Speaking of the game's modes, the retail version includes several acts with a handful of quests, called unsurprisingly the Quest Mode. In the Quest Mode you fight back different waves of foes; for instance, in the first level you'll notice your entire goal is simply to eradicate everything on the screen. However, later on you may find yourself having to bust monster spawning objects while the waves chase you around.

@mayowadavid

When you beat a level in the Quest Mode, you will have either unlocked a gun or a perk. The guns are self-explanatory. Perks however are almost like level-ups in a role-playing game; when you kill enough monsters in any game mode, you gain a level, or as they call it, "Pick a perk". Perks will give your lonely little fellow all sorts of strange superhero-esque abilities ranging from slightly raising your reaction time by slowing the rest of the game down, to firing your gun faster, to emitting a radioactive aura. The game has some 50+ perks and there are no limits to which ones you want to use; you can use them all at once if you last long enough in a single round of Survival Mode.

crimson @mayowadavid

Survival Mode, speaking of, is exactly what it sounds like. You begin with just a pistol and your serene surroundings. However, within the first five seconds, aliens start toddling into the screen. Their trickle is slow and guns drop from most of the starting monsters, as it's not wise to be caught in the mid-late game with a pistol. From there it's a nonstop killing spree, and it's not unusual for the entire ground to be 100% coated in blood about ten minutes into the game. Survival Mode's entire purpose is for a high score, but you may find yourself going back to it much more often than Quest Mode because of the hectic, nonstop nature of it and the ability to stack up tons of perks and acquire a sweet gun.

Between the several hours you could dump into the campaign, and the endless hours you could spend trying to get the highest Survival score possible, it’s hard to say this game ever gets boring. Obviously if you hate top-view shooters it may not be for you, but I’d recommend this to just about anyone who enjoys mobile gaming

Verdict

The Gameplay is extremely rewarding and addicting, you’ve got a lengthy campaign with plenty of reason to play through multiple times, and five bonus game modes to keep you coming back for more. Unlocking weapons and perks regularly also really helps keep the game interesting.

Controls

To move your character around is very easy. You can aim at the aliens, zombies, spiders, and ghosts, and your torso will turn separately from your legs allowing you to fire in any direction while running in any other direction. While this at first may seem awkward seeing your legs running one way and your torso facing the other, it doesn't matter, because after about thirty seconds in the game's survival mode you won't be paying attention to anything but the beasties.

Graphics

The game looks good, but slightly blurry. It's 3D accelerated but uses 2-Dimensional sprites for all of its artwork; you can crank the resolution up but it generally doesn't help much. Even with the 2-Dimension it still work well. And somehow, just somehow, it never gets boring watching a Nuke bonus pickup explode or see a flurry of plasma from the Plasma Shotgun mow down a crowd of pissed off spiders/aliens/zombies. There really isn’t a whole lot to complain about when it comes to Crimsonland’s graphics, except for the ugly movement/firing joysticks and the lack of visual customization for the character.

Sounds

Crimsonland sounds great. All the gunfire is nailed nicely, and shotguns especially sound like they're packing a nice kick. The music in the game is mostly hard metal to accompany your bloodshed, and it certainly gets the job done. Though it can get slightly repetitious, they are in fact places to download different music. How I wish the game could read third party music file, it will have been quiet lovely.

Final Review

Overall there is absolutely no reason why I wouldn't recommend Crimsonland to someone, especially being that it's a budget title. It gets running and gunning down to a beautiful messy science and the result is ultimately very rewarding. The feeling of being surrounded by impossible odds only to pick up Fire Bullets is an amazing concept. All claim made about the game starting from controls and design are usually made available in form of screen shot from other player, check the screenshot above to find out what other player are saying about Crimsonland .
