The story of Heroes of Might and Magic III is not directly connected with the two previous scenes of the cycle and takes us to a completely new, fantastic land called Erathia, located on the fictional continent of Antagari. After the murder of King Gryphonheart, ruler of Erathia, this land fell under the pressure of the dark forces of Nighon and Eofol. On the news of this, Queen Catherine - Gryphonheart's daughter and wife of Roland Ironfist (hero of Heroes of Might and Magic II) - returns to her homeland with the intention of uniting her countrymen and leading them to fight against the evil that devastated their country. To achieve this goal, Catherine will have to face many powerful opponents, among which will include her own father, restored by the necromancers to life.

The game focuses primarily on the strategic exploration of the Erathia world map and the tactical fight against opponents in the classic turn-based system. As in the previous parts of the game, players take control of several heroes, who are at the head of an army of various types of mythical and fantastic creatures. An extremely important element of the game is the expansion of owned cities; there are eight types: three "good" (Castle, Bastion and Fortress), three "bad" (Inferno, Nekropolis and Loch) and two "neutral" (Fortress and Citadel). They perform many important functions - including they allow you to recruit and develop units.

Within a year of its release, the Heroes of Might and Magic III game has two official extensions: Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death, as well as a special, Golden Edition containing the basic game with both additions. In addition, the game released a whole bunch of unofficial accessories, the most-known of which is Heroes of Might and Magic 3: In the Wake of Gods (2001) and released over 12 years after the premiere Horn of the Abyss.
