In the first part of Heroes of Might and Magic, heroes were characterized by four skills: attack, defense, power and knowledge. In Heroes of Might and Magic II, these factors have been extended by a number of additional side skills. Each hero can gain up to eight of these skills and develop them from the basic level, advanced to the expert level. Side-by-side skills have different tasks: wisdom allows you to learn spells from higher levels of mage guards, necromancy - to revive after the battle of parts killed in the form of skeletons, and logistics increases the limit of hero movement points for each turn. When the hero is promoted to a higher level of experience, one of his main features increases by one point, he must also choose one of two additional skills.

In Heroes of Might and Magic II, four new pre-hero classes - knight, barbarian, sorceress and wizard - were added two new ones: necromancer and wizard, as well as their castles and new creatures.

Heroes of Might and Magic II is the first Heroes of Might and Magic game in which you can upgrade some creatures to increase their combat qualities. Usually the improvement consists in correcting one or several factors, although sometimes the creature gains new possibilities. For example, vampires after upgrading to vampire lords receive the ability to drain energy from the enemy and heal, and even revive it. Green dragons, the most powerful unenforced unit, have two stages of development - the red dragon and the black dragon. Other upgradeable units increase their abilities only once.

The castle is mainly used to recruit heroes and units. Initially, only weak units are available, however, sufficient amount of collected resources will allow to build habitats of more powerful creatures. You can also build other buildings, such as a mage guild or a shipyard. There are six castles in Heroes of Might and Magic II: a barbarian, a knight, a necromancer, a sorceress, a sorcerer and a wizard.
