Street Fighter V - complete crap (almost)?
Let me start by saying that I played every or almost every Street Fighter fighting game made. I even play Street Fighter ll Deluxe 2 (MUGEN) once in a while. Didn't try the Street Fighter 2 Nintendo Switch version though...
But we're here to talk about Street Fighter V right?
Street fighter V is the latest installment of the Street Fighter franchise (if you don't count the Switch game, which is a remake of Super Street Fighter II Turbo... with a few extras).
Having played the Ultra Street Fighter IV for PC, I actually had great hopes for SF5. I honestly even thought about buying SF5 on a Steam sale several times, but ultimately I never did because I saw no value in that game, and I'll explain why.
First shock I got was the fact that there was no arcade mode (and it still doesn't exist on this day). What is this? Sacrilege! Put the which in the pyre! XD
Seriously, no arcade mode in a arcade fighting game? What the hell are you thinking Capcom? -.-
Then, the remapping of the control keys. Yeah, I'm that old school! I've always played fighting games (and almost every other game) on my keyboard. But that might soon change because I'm thinking of building an arcade fight stick... ;p
I mean, you can remap the keys, but only within the set of keys that the games chooses for you! That's the same than putting you in a cage and say that you are free because you can run inside your cage.
Then comes the individual character story mode. I thought to myself: maybe this is some kind of compartmentalized story mode. Well? Yes and no! The progression has some story into it, but there's no real relation between characters, the story for each character is reduced to 3 or 4 fights and the fights are so damn easy that I could play them all with two broken arms and my eyes closed! Absolutely no challenge! I finished all characters in one night. -.-
It was clear to me that this game went gold without being finished! When will game developers and publishers stop treating us like stupid dumb nerds and stop selling us unfinished, incomplete beta games?
Do it like me and protest with your money: don't buy these games, even if you absolutely love them as much as you do the mother of your child (or not)!
How dare they release an incomplete game and charge for additional DLC, even when they promised initially that additional content would be free?
How dare they not include characters that are series favorites like Sagat?
How dare they make you pay extra for Akuma?
And the whole micro transaction thing just stinks... The necessary fight money (in-game currency) to unlock certain things like extra stages, extra skins, etc, comes to a point that it is harder to get, and to get those things you need, once again, to pay extra.
In the middle of all of this mess, the characters actually are very playable, very well designed, the moves are great, amazing graphics and are balanced.
You know why Sagat was not included? He was sacrificed in the name of balance (of character types/fighting styles), because there were already "many" Shoto style characters.
SF5 was a game designed from the ground up to be used competitively since day one. That was Capcom's objective. But I say, the number of competitive gamers around the world is very small compared to those that like/want the game and don't compete. They just play at their homes, single player or with a friend, and multiplayer online. So, in order to compensate the lost sales on people like me that got pissed and wouldn't buy the game, they screwed whoever bought the game, overcharging the initial price and charging for content that they promised would be free! People that bought this game got screwed so deep that even WD40 wouldn't get that screw out of their bums!
Later, they tried to redeem themselves (or so they thought) by giving us a true story mode. That was actually interesting... for a little while. But where is the arcade mode?
Guess what, they announced recently a Street Fighter V Arcade Edition, with an arcade mode. Alleluia brothers! Can I get an amen?
They will charge almost full price for a game that is almost 2 years old, and is now coming out the way it should have been in the first place! Maybe I'll buy it (since it will now be complete) but only in a Steam sale or something.
In my opinion, they focused too much on the competitive aspect of the game, which is a niche market compared to the general gaming market. I honestly hope that they learned their lesson and stop screwing around with one of my favorite game franchises of all time! Capcom, you naughty naughty boys... you should be spanked in the ass just like little children when they misbehave. Now, stop acting like a cold hearted billionaire and go do what you do best, which is, great games!
