For years, Traveler's Tales has been offering well-known franchises LEGO treatment. The result is a game with cute-looking characters and slapstick humor. This time it is again Marvel's turn to undergo this treatment. Whether the treatment is successful, you can read in this LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 review.

In 2013, the Marvel universe was put into a LEGO game for the first time . The result was a successful game that also became the best-selling LEGO game so far. So it was not the question if, but when the sequel to this successful game would come. That moment has now arrived in the form of LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2.

Kang will conquer

After the events in the previous game, the heroes find it time to celebrate the victory. The party in the Avengers Mansion has only just ended, or the next threat is already under way in the form of Kang the Conqueror. The danger of Kang is soon noticeable when Kang already makes it difficult for the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Kang's master plan is to conquer many different worlds of the Marvel universe. He wants to merge the conquered worlds into one big city called Chronopolis. Meanwhile, Kang can keep an eye on everything from his huge tower in the middle of the city. Everywhere in the city there is propaganda from Kang and there is chaos in the various streets.

The city

Much of the fun in this LEGO game is discovering Chronopolis. The entire city is freely accessible as HUB in the game. It is a very diverse city with the different environments and settings that you encounter. Furthermore, it looks visually beautiful for a Lego game.

You will not get bored easily in Chronopolis. There is a wide range of activities to experience in the city such as races, collectables and side missions. In these side missions, heroes and other acquaintances need your help. A nice change to do in between, when you're on your way to a next main mission.

The missions

Stopping Kang is of course the main goal of the storyline in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2. Together with a large roster of superheroes (this time without the X-Men and Fantastic Four, but with the Inhumans and different universes) you go out in groups during the missions. The composition of these groups changes constantly during the storyline. In this way, other heroes will strengthen the team, while others take a break between the missions.

A supporting role in the missions is for J. Jonah Jameson, who connects the whole story in his own style via a "livestream". A nice way to make clear what exactly is going on in the story line. Gwenpool undertakes this task for the side missions.

The missions in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 are very linear. They contain the same structure as in previous LEGO games, consisting of some platform action and puzzles in combination with various mini-games. Do not expect any groundbreaking innovations in this area.

What is unfortunate is that almost every interaction with an object consists of ramming on different buttons. Remove a door from the wall or repair a machine? Press B / square twenty times. Calculate how often you heat up the buttons when you come across at least five of these types of objects per level.

Boss Rush

If your fingers are not tired of button mashing, then the boss fights will do this. At the end of each level you always have at least a boss fight. Not surprising, of course, given the many villains in the game. Where in the films the battles between the heroes and the villains usually belong to the highlights, this is not entirely the case in the game.

It is always fun to beat a villain like Electro, but in the boss fights there is often a lack of challenge. It often comes down to ramming brainless buttons to do as much damage as possible, until a shield appears around the villain, after which you have to avoid all kinds of objects and so on. If you then also have levels in which you have to defeat five bosses in a row, your fingers need all the rest by the button rams. Fortunately, not every fight is like that and there are also villains against which you have to fight with more strategy.

The dialogues at the beginning and the end of the boss fights are very beautiful and often bring a smile to your face through the combination of LEGO and Marvel humor. Some scenes could be used almost directly in a Marvel film. Certainly Marvel fans will appreciate the dialogues and events, just like the blinking of Marvel's other comics.

Evil camera

In addition to the villains you encounter, Kang has also created another obstacle to prevent him from killing him, it seems. We are talking about the camera here. Now the irritating camera positions are already something that many LEGO game has to deal with, but in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 this is very emphatically present.

During the boss fights it happens that the camera causes you to lose sight of the villain and is therefore completely disoriented. Not fun and certainly not when suddenly you get a strong attack on your roof from scratch. The same problem occurs with other activities such as flying or webling. If the camera here suddenly decides to run without a reason, it makes you lose your sense of direction completely, or the enemy you were chasing.

This problem is even more noticeable in split-screen. The LEGO games are almost made to play with a friend on the couch, but here too the camera makes the previously described points in the game even more frustrating. Sin.

Collect and unlock

As far as playing fun itself is concerned, it's okay. The game contains enough content to keep you sweet for a while. The storyline of the game consists of twenty missions, which amounts to seven to eight hours of playing time. This may not seem like much, but besides the storyline you still have the activities in Chronopolis and there are the ten Gwenpool side missions, where you get other heroes under the buttons that you unlock afterwards. Collecting the characters is also addictive and time consuming, because with more than 300 characters in total this will take some time.

A new addition to the missions is the Battle Arena. Here you fight with up to four people at once in a large arena. This can be done in local co-op or against the computer. This game mode is fun to start with friends, but is by no means exciting enough to put a lot of time into it.

If you still want to play the game in co-op, i advise you to go through the story line with a friend. This is, just as with other LEGO games, fully playable in co-op. You can also simply discover Chronopolis and take on missions. Together, of course, is it much more fun?

Conclusion

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 does exactly what you expect from a LEGO game without introducing many new things. The HUB world is bigger and more diverse, there are more characters and there is a longer storyline. Unfortunately, the game contains some irritations such as the camera and the constant button frames. Fans of Marvel and LEGO will feel that they are happy during the rescuing of the world.

Pros

➕ Large number of characters
➕ Much to do in Chronopolis
➕ Funny dialogues

Cons
