Unreal Engine Makes Its Debut Featuring Full Support For Augmented Reality

At long last Epic Games, the company behind Unreal Tournament and Fortnite, just released Unreal Engine 4.20. A major gaming engine now has full support for ARKit and ARCore, the augmented reality developers tools for Apple and Google, respectively.

While this addition to Epic's signature engine was announced in the beginning of 2018, the company has been relatively quiet about it's debut. But with mixed reality knocking on the door of industries from manufacturing to national defense, it's clear that these new mediums are being adopted by major companies at a rapid rate.

Finally, game developers will be able to try their hand at making games with using a few advanced features unique to this iteration of Unreal Engine: camera control, eye tracking and deferred rendering - just to name a few.

Complex object recognition, arguably the most challenging aspect of augmented reality experiences to "get right," also receive a significant boost with this update.

While this is certainly big news for those of us involved in the mixed reality space, it wasn't the sole reason for the update. Epic also released 100+ mobile optimizations for their massively popular game-turned-social-phenomenon: Fortnite.

Perhaps most interesting is that this new Engine offers developers the ability to launch "spectator" modes - effectively enabling them to add players into scenes. That said, this feature is still in beta so expect some glitches until the next release or two.

But as developers are able to tinker with things like 4K resolution video, webcam placement and other devices that utilize HDMI capture, it's likely that Epic will outdo themselves on the next iteration of Unreal Engine.

UPDATE JUNE 28th, 2018

We've been busy…

  1. We are working on opening the eShop on schedule on July 31st. We will have a variety of tech and designer glasses at launch.

  2. The eShop will be the only place in the world to get Rx eyewear and smartglasses with BTC/ETH.

  3. LCD integration in eShop (for rewards, loyalty program, glasses purchase) planned for later this year.

  4. LCD token wallet smartphone/watch app in development. Expected Q1 '19. Our goal is that the LCD app will use same account as eShop to unify user experience with the token - for example, buying a new smartglass on lucyd.co gives you an LCD reward, which you can then access from your Bluetooth-connected smartglass.

  5. Lucyd is also developing a platform-agnostic app to improve general synergy of wearables and IoT devices, called LINK. Expected release Q4 this year. US Patent application to be submitted on July 2nd 2018 to cover this app. This will be Lucyd's 14th intellectual property (either a licensed patent and/or patent application).

That's all for now! We are still seeking new token exchanges with reasonable listing fees, so please bring them to our attention at [email protected]. You may also direct any other concerns there. Thanks!
