How to Improve in CS:GO

Intruduction

I'm a semi professional player in the German Counterstrike Scene.

I currently have over 4,200h in playtime and attended at many national LAN events.

Im writing this guide to show you on how to improve your own game.

Mindset

After competing at many LAN Events within Germany (e.g. GSH Lan , Dreamhack Leipzig) i can tell that most Teams usually don't care a lot about this factor. In my eyes its more demanding as ever.

Astralis, undoubtedly one of the best teams in the past years, has hired a sports psychologist as seen here:  Youtube Video

Means you don't have to be a top tier team to benefit from a good mindset within a team. Most People get angry when playing fps or other shooter games but having a clear mind and a good attitude not only as a team but also as an individual.

Setup

First of all, you don't have to have the most expensive or best gear that is out there. Important is, that you are used with it. I once had a friend that played incredibly good with a 5 dollar office mouse. What im trying to tell, price isn't the factor that matters. Get gear that suits you, not the one companies tries to sell on you. If you really cant decide, get a hands on experience at a local store or buy a bunch and send em back.

Warm-up

When I started playing professionally (Faceit LV10 Tournaments and ESEA Main) i had huge problems with consistency. Sure i wasn't under performing but i had troubles with aiming, movement and holding specific Sites.

I created a warm up schedule for myself. I'm gonna share the one i did back then. After an important Match i usually played:

  • 20 Minutes or until my hand started to hurt: Aim_Reflex  (Order of Guns I play: USP-S, M4A4 and AK 47)
  • 20 Minutes or 2x 10 Minutes Deathmatch with Real Players ( Play HS Mod if u prefer)
  • 10-15 Minutes Casual, for getting used playing the 'normal' Spawns, Timings etc.

I never had a dedicated training / warum up method for movement, bhoping or Strafing. Some People do it every day, i think its enough when you practice it once a week or so.

In Game

Depending on your team style or player positions you may have an ingame leader (later on called IGL). Make sure that's the guy with moste knowledge in strategies and maps.

Always, listen to the strategies he gives you. Every random or unplanned move can change the outcome of a Round. Call out important players, spots to him and the rest of the team. Decide what to do after achieving the info to calculate risks.

If you don't get a step into the game (e.g. if the enemy as CT is holding the first 5-6 rounds) go ahead and take a timeout. This does the following:

  • breaks the flow of the enemy, after winning many rounds in a row
  • gives you time to rethink the previous rounds as a team (focus on improvements rather then mistakes)
  • planning the next round with the knowledge you got from the previous rounds

Analyzing Replays

Force yourself and the team to review at least one replay or demo from the past week. First focus on the team relating things like timings, positioning, executing strategies and rotating as a ct.

Second go ahead and look at individuals either alone or with team members. Analyse behavior and in site communication (Demos with voice recordings help a lot). And please only give constructive criticism for individuals.
